Thanks guys. Please consider coming to the event. It's going to be big.

Plus, the big bell is well over 2100 lbs and sounds AMAZING. And you can ring it with a rubber mallet.

they couldn't finish it because of funding during the Great Depression and WWII

basically, by finishing it now you're removing the memory of why it went unfinished for so long (times of strife, struggle, death, etc)

I think it stands for more unfinished than it will when it's finished

so I'm very disappointed that there's a crusade to get this done

I don't think it loses any history by completing the task our predecessors could not. Particularly if a point is made to remember why it stood for the greater part of the century without bells. I don't think any history of NC State would be complete without an understanding of the sacrifices the college made during war times, regardless of the bells themselves.

^^You realize its history is not lost? Now, instead of a bell-less bell tower with an interesting story of why there are no bells, there are two stories and even more history.

This. Couldn't finish the bell tower in the first great depression... finished the bell tower at the onset of the second great depression.

Gotta make it over from the Vet School, not an easy undertaking at 5 PM with traffic and parking to consider

It also stood literally half-built for 10 years or so, from the mid 20's to the mid 30's, partially because of the Depression. So when they topped it out in '37 did it stand for less than when it was half a tower? When they installed the chimes, shrine room, and dedicated the tower in 1949 (after funding was delayed by WWII) did it stand for less than when it was empty?

Why did they fucking finish the Washington Monument?

It's pissing on the grave of George Washington that they finished the capstone anyway after years of stagnation due to financial woe.

It's a real disgrace to America.

/sarcasm

What awful but commonly used reasoning. We see it used everyday in that great old line of dialogue about how "we can't forget that Christianity is why the USA even exists! It should be close to the heart of our government, and we as a people should be Christian, otherwise we are spitting in the face of history!"

we are awaiting scheduled renovations to prepare the tower for the bells' arrival. there is some structural damage that has been plaguing the tower that was going to be fixed regardless of bells. We are going to wait till that is finished and a new diaphragm truss is installed in the belfry to support the existing roof.

we also cannot install these three until there are five. Once the first five are paid for, the frame is paid for and we can hang them and ring them. Then, in phase II, all we have to do is hang the smaller bells in bunches - no complex rigging or electronics. that is all taken care of in phase 1.

we need

Bell No. 7 - 30in. in diameter, C above middle C, 650lbs
Bell No. 12 - 23-1/8" in diameter, octave above the lowest bell (No. 1), 340lbs.

we have

Bell No. 1, 2100lbs, 45in. in diameter, F below middle C - paid by class of 2010
Bell No. 14, 260lbs, 21-3/16" in diameter, G, private donor
Bell No. 16, 195lbs, 19-1/2" in diameter, A, private donor

these five bells compose the westminster chime (think grandfather clock) - made popular by Big Ben's Clocktower in London.

See the website for more information on musical range.

OK so I'm sitting here at a piano trying to figure out what this will sound like and it the description doesn't quite make sense.

If bell #1 is F below middle C... and bell #12 is one octave above bell #1, then that would be the F above middle C. This makes perfect sense because western music generally has 12 tones per octave.

But then, bell #7 is listed C above middle C? In order for bell #7 to properly fall between #1 and #12, wouldn't that make it just middle C?

Then, #14 and the #16 bought by the private donors would then be G and A above middle C respectively.

But maybe there's something about bell-ology that I just don't get...

most carillon music is written for a carillon where the largest bell is a C below middle C. If the pitch of the carillon is not a C, then the carillon is said to be transposing. Ours will be transposed up a perfect fourth, or 5 semitones. Music is played as if the lowest note is middle c, but in fact will be F3.

westminster is as follows:

in real life- C4, F4, G, A, big bell is middle C.
our actual carillon notes of those bells are: G, C4, D, and E. Where the big bell is F3

intervals thus:

I am really surprised that more practical jokes weren't played on the music that came out of the speakers.

I was always prepared to be walking across campus and hear the Soviet National Anthem or Back Dat Ass Up come blaring out of the speakers.

I wish I could make this.

Does remind me of a time I was showing a girl around campus and got to the bell tower. She said, "Ugh! That's disgusting! It's a monument to war!"

I got confused. "No...it's all about the end of war. See here?"

"Yeah, exactly! It says 'they shall beat their swords into plowshares.'"

It took me a minute before I figured it out: she thought "plowshares" were people, and the quote was instructing us to beat those people with swords. The relationship went downhill quickly from that point on.
