There were threads for Tough Mudder, Warrior Dash, and a few others last year...thought I'd start one to include everything...

I kicked off the "season" by getting my whole family to do the Spartan Race in Charlotte a couple weeks ago. Very proud of all of them for getting through it, and extra accolades to my mother who was the only female running 60 or over. The course had some great obstacles, although since we were running as a group I can't comment on how tough it was overall. I was also disappointed that the lightning knocked out the last water obstacle, but oh well.

Did the ABF run last weekend in New Jersey, where it was very much not warm at all...water obstacles came close to rivaling the water temp at the NJ Tough Mudder in November. They also came up with one of the coolest obstacles I've seen at one of these:

Anyone else running?

I just want something like wipeout or ultimate ninja warrior (except something I can actually complete ). Screw the whole 10 mile thing, just give me a ton of fun obstacles to go through.

that obstacle looks like it would fuck you up if you somehow ended up falling

^^One day while I was bored at work I actually searched for hours on whether you can run the Wipeout course for fun...it seems no... You might be interested in trying MetroDash though...I didn't do it last year, but will this year. From what I understand it's what you're looking for, although probably not nearly as awesome as Wipeout or Ninja Warrior

^I missed the bottom bar on my first attempt, slipped on the way down, and smashed against the ramp pretty hard...parts of my side that hit are still fairly sore

this shit is all the rage now

so bad that they are popping up in small towns with poor setups and charging ~$50 - $100 per person

to run a fucking 5k with cheesy obstacles (I'm looking at you, Cary Spartan Race)

no thanks

if you are interested in this type of stuff, make sure you do one of the larger, more well-known races

and sign up as early as possible

I did the Rugged Maniac for the second year in a row in February. I have a great time with it, and this year was much better than last. You actually only run at most 1/2 mile between obstacles. And the obstacles were extremely muddy this year compared to last year. We had a great time and will certainly do it again next year. I've actually considered doing the NC rugged maniac this month.

"Just run a fucking 5k"

I can't speak for everyone, but I find "just running" to be among the most boring possible activities on the planet. On the other hand I enjoy going through obstacles. Is this really a difficult concept for people to understand?

And yes, sometimes I wish they were even less than 5k and were just one long obstacle course. I guess I am a weirdo.

Also with respect to the comment about running in the larger ones. I agree that they are safer and better run, but I don't mind having some stuff thrown at me that has a better chance of getting hurt. The bigger races would never toss the obstacle I put a picture of in their race because it probably has a fairly high incidence of injury, but I thought it was awesome. Also only 250 people ran in this one, as opposed to 10,000. It's a bit nicer that way.

I'm being talked into one nearby in the fall. I can do the running part just fine, not sure about the
upper body strength part. As long as my teammates aren't super serious,, I don't mind getting muddy.

The adrenaline rush will carry you through. Tough Mudder is more for fun, when you get serious, its gay. Plus the whole concept is teamwork and making money for the Wounded Warrior Project.

I don't really consider the Tough Mudder to be fun any more. I enjoy seeing how quickly I can get me through most obstacles like monkey bars, walls, etc...but after jumping in freezing cold ice water and getting electrocuted during a few tough mudders I already know I can do it. I wouldn't really classify those particular activities as fun any more now that I know I can do them.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I did them and I'll probably do more...and if you haven't done one I think you'll probably feel great about doing it, it's just not one I enjoy doing repeatedly

I agree ElGimpy completely. It's nice when people start talking about a nearby Tough Mudder and I can throw out that I've done one, however that being said I don't have much of a desire to do anymore. It's not like a marathon or other set event where I can really go out and improve my time and see any measurable performance increase since the obstacles and terrain in between is all so random.

Seeing improvement on these races is definitely an exercise in intangibility (apt usage? )

The best way I've found is to just compare overall percentile finish. Much in the same way that a body fat test might not be completely accurate, it's at least a good indicator to compare race to race. While you never really know if the people who finish ahead of you actually did all the obstacles or not, that won't change drastically from event to event. And while the obstacles and distance change race to race and year to year, the population is doing them all the same...so...yeah...percentile finish. A good way to aggregate all your races is to use Athlinks (http://www.athlinks.com/)

I oversaw the Swamp Romp on Parris Island for the past few years because the people who drew out the course didn't think about the fact they were running everyone right by the spot where there were some gator holes and nests. Didn't have any issues, but I'm no longer out there...so good luck to everyone.

i'm considering tough mudder charlotte. i haven't looked at it much, need to figure out the deadline.

i'm more interested in having something to train for and incentive to push workouts a bit harder, than i am in the actual race. could be fun though.

Wouldn't be the first death. I read an article a while back about a guy in Texas who died in one even though he was in tremendous shape. I will pass on these types of things.

Skywalkr,

Not everyone has the same decision-making matrix that you have. I also find this thought to be useful when dealing with grocery store or fast-food clerks.

Goodness you all are a bunch of cheeky cunts. All I said was someone in great shape died doing one of these and I don't see the point in them. If you like them knock yourself out and don't get your panties in a twist about a differing opinion.
