on a regular basis? I usually have one beer at night sometimes two, mostly homebrew. Sometimes I wonder if I should take a month off from drinking beer to, you know, dry up or if drinking beer that regularly wasn't a big deal. Thoughts? Opinions? 4/12/2012 9:41:12 AM |

It fluctuates with me. I might go five days without having a drop and then put down 10-15 2-3 days in a row (if its a weekend).
So I guess if I had to average it all out, 1-2 per day. I'll say that I rarely drink at home though. I almost never buy beer to put in the fridge at home. 4/12/2012 9:48:34 AM |

Hardly ever, I never really developed a taste for it. I found a few things at World of Beer that I like, but I typically stick to rum and coke or cider if I'm having a drink in the evenings, and even that's on once or twice a week basis. 4/12/2012 9:52:47 AM |

in average, probably 1 beer per day. I drink more for the taste than the effect these days. I'll go a week without a beer but some others I might drink 2-3.
If i'm out with friends at the bar maybe 5-6 that evening. I try no to get smashed that much anymore. 4/12/2012 9:54:30 AM |

^Like 4x4 I drink it for the taste and not so much for the effect. When I started homebrewing I noticed I really liked the taste of some beers, one of them is a tripel which comes in at about 8% ABV so I get a buzz even though that not really the point. 4/12/2012 10:02:33 AM |

I like to have 3 beers/glasses of wine with dinner/after dinner. That usually gives me the semi-buzz that I like to go to sleep with.
Weekends vary....but that's my normal mon-fri schedule.

My drinking habits over the past year has consisted of 2 weekday drinking nights, and 2 weekend drinking nights.
Typically around 8-10 on the weeknights, and 14+ on the weekend nights.
I've had some non-serious health issues from continual drinking, and have pledged to take a 2 week break to cleanse myself. 4/12/2012 10:17:32 AM |

Used to have a beer or two with dinner maybe 2 or 3 times a week; so max, a 6 pack a week. That was up until about a month or so ago. Now, not so much I still have a beer when I got out for dinner. 4/12/2012 10:19:51 AM |

I drink maybe once a week. If I'm going to drink, it'll be 5-7 beers.
Sometimes it's not worth it, though. I remember the glory days when I could drink heavily 3 nights in a row and feel great. Now I feel like shit after one night of moderate drinking for most of the day after. I don't like what it does to my sleep cycle. 4/12/2012 10:29:39 AM |

I was thinking he meant sampling vs having a full beer. When I did the brewing class at ABG you did a lot of sampling, kind of like wine tasting where you swirl and sniff it and all that stuff vs just nursing it over a period of 15 or 20 minutes.4/12/2012 11:12:54 AM |

haha i guess i should have clarified... I'm volunteering to pour beer at the beer festival... while we aren't allowed to drink while we are pouring, we are supposed to sample the beers we are pouring before-hand. Also there is a volunteer party afterwards where they supply beer for free. 4/12/2012 11:16:08 AM |

this.
I don't really drink by myself, occasionally I have a good beer with a nice meal at home, or drink a homebrew after working in the yard or something but that's pretty infrequent. So basically I drink the most when I'm out at night and weekends with friends which is typically in the 8-12 range.
There's a difference too between craft beer (higher ABV%) so the quantity is likely going to be a lot less than the 3 case alcoholics drinkers that are addicted to Bud Light Platinum 64 High Life.
I gave up beer for lent (all 47 days, no exceptions) and coming back to beer was ever so bliss. (I did not lose weight, I did think about beer 2x more than normal)

I definitely drank more on a daily average in grad school than undergrad, but I really didn't binge drink like I did in undergrad either. The older I get, however, the easier it gets to become hungover and also my responsibilities in the mornings have increased, which has slimmed down the appropriate drinking window quite a bit.4/12/2012 6:24:11 PM |

You have to be a fool to not believe peer-reviewed studies.
In moderation, there are proven health benefits to drinking 1-2 drinks per day.
Quote : | "http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/alcohol-full-story/index.html#possible_health_benefits
Part of a national 1985 health interview survey showed that moderate drinkers were more likely than non-drinkers or heavy drinkers to be at a healthy weight, to get seven to eight hours of sleep a night, and to exercise regularly. (11) Researchers have statistically accounted for such confounders, and they do not come close to accounting for the relationship between alcohol and heart disease. This, plus the clearly beneficial effects of alcohol on cardiovascular risk factors, makes a compelling case that alcohol itself, when used in moderation, reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.
The benefits of moderate drinking aren't limited to the heart. In the Nurses' Health Study, the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, and other studies, gallstones (12, 13) and type 2 diabetes (5, 14, 15) were less likely to occur in moderate drinkers than in non-drinkers. The emphasis here, as elsewhere, is on moderate drinking. In a meta-analysis of 15 original prospective cohort studies that followed 369,862 participants for an average of 12 years, no benefit was observed for heavy drinkers who consumed more than 48 grams of alcohol (the equivalent of four drinks) a day. (5) The social and psychological benefits of alcohol can't be ignored. A drink before a meal can improve digestion or offer a soothing respite at the end of a stressful day; the occasional drink with friends can be a social tonic. These physical and psychic effects may contribute to health and well-being." |
Of course every person is different:
Quote : | "Given the complexity of alcohol's effects on the body and the complexity of the people who drink it, blanket recommendations about alcohol are out of the question. Because each of us has unique personal and family histories, alcohol offers each person a different spectrum of benefits and risks. Whether or not to drink alcohol, especially for "medicinal purposes," requires careful balancing of these benefits and risks." |
But that doesn't mean benefits don't exist at all.

^this sums up my thoughts and the research articles you posted.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/16/health/16alco.html?pagewanted=all
Quote : | "“The moderate drinkers tend to do everything right — they exercise, they don’t smoke, they eat right and they drink moderately,” said Kaye Middleton Fillmore, a retired sociologist from the University of California, San Francisco, who has criticized the research. “It’s very hard to disentangle all of that, and that’s a real problem.”
" |
Quote : | "“The bottom line is there has not been a single study done on moderate alcohol consumption and mortality outcomes that is a ‘gold standard’ kind of study — the kind of randomized controlled clinical trial that we would be required to have in order to approve a new pharmaceutical agent in this country,” said Dr. Tim Naimi, an epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
" |
Quote : | "Dr. Naimi of the C.D.C., who did a study looking at the characteristics of moderate drinkers and abstainers, says the two groups are so different that they simply cannot be compared. Moderate drinkers are healthier, wealthier and more educated, and they get better health care, even though they are more likely to smoke. They are even more likely to have all of their teeth, a marker of well-being.
“Moderate drinkers tend to be socially advantaged in ways that have nothing to do with their drinking,” Dr. Naimi said. “These two groups are apples and oranges.” And simply advising the nondrinkers to drink won’t change that, he said.

^^Yea, you're right, you know because of all the social advantages I have, all the research should be thrown out the window.
You know what, you might as well throw all the research about the negative effects of alcohol out the window because those susceptible to being alcoholics are socially disadvantaged and come from low-income households, are more genetically prone to being alcoholics, have poor health-care, etc. etc.
It goes both ways.

^^^I'm not saying I have the answer. My belief that alcohol in moderation is not good for you is speculation. I did enjoy it when I drank, but I still believed that all this "drinking in moderation" is bunch of BS paid by big lobbies or founded on uncontrolled studies. Just like the article says...they really never took a controlled group of people and took their liver enzymes, measured artery plaque (and whatever else) before and after alcohol consumption over a long term like 10-20 years. 4/12/2012 9:10:14 PM |
