Bands not in the R&R HOF:

"6. New Order
With our sixth selection we had a bit of an internal debate. We were very tempted to merge the work of Joy Division and New Order to form one entry. There is a precedent for this as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame collectively inducted Parliament and Funkadelic but unlike the aforementioned Funk outfits, New Order began when Joy Division ended and their sounds were different enough to illicit separate entries.

7. Roxy Music
We wondered aloud if the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame just plain forgot about our seventh selection. It is curious that with both the Velvet Underground and the Talking Heads enshrined that Roxy Music; the premier Art Rock band between them has not received a serious look for induction.

8. The Beastie Boys
Eventually as more Rap and Hip Hop artists become eligible for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, we suspect that our future NIHOF lists will be populated with them. Until then, we will have to settle for the few we do have, and our next selection, The Beastie Boys seems like a great place to start in respect to the genre.

9. The Smiths
The next group is a band that has been considered one of the most important groups of the 1980’s. Although, The Smiths were a far bigger deal in their native England than they were on the other side of the Atlantic; though finding many passionate fans of The Smiths in North America is far from difficult.

10. Willie Nelson
With our tenth selection we know that we are again breaking traditional Rock protocol. However, sometimes an artist just has a certain intangible that just makes you like them even though his music sounds like nothing else in your CD (now MP3) collection. We here at the Not in Hall of Fame can’t help but think that Willie Nelson is one of those artists.

11. Jethro Tull
With our top selection of Rush, we mentioned the lack of Progressive Rock acts in the Hall. The bulk of that genre originated in the United Kingdom and it is there where we make our next selection, Jethro Tull. However, like many other British Progressive Rock bands they are on the outside looking in.

12. Judas Priest
When the NIHOF committee gathered to discuss our next entrant we did what we could to forget the terrible Mark Wahlberg movie (Rock Star) that was loosely based on them. Instead we chose to focus on how important Judas Priest was in Heavy Metal’s progression.

13. The Cure
After we came up with our rankings, it just seemed right for the Cure to be associated with number thirteen. The mystical number might fit the gothic image of a band (who ironically despised that label) better than any other group on this list.

16. John Coltrane
With this selection, we approach an artist who we just couldn’t figure out where to place; or even if we should place him at all. Was John Coltrane right for the Roots and Early Influence category? We didn’t think so as his greatest success and period of influence was simultaneous with the British Invasion. Does Jazz have a viable place in the Hall? We think so, as Miles Davis is in and many a Rock genre is Jazz infused. Besides, if any Jazz great had a “Rock Star” quality, it was John Coltrane.

24. Stevie Ray Vaughan
A few of us remembered at NIHOF when Stevie Ray Vaughan passed away in a tragic helicopter crash. A running joke that went around was how terrible it was that Stevie Ray was dead and all the New Kids on the Block are still alive. Nearly twenty years later, his fans miss him as much as they did when he was first taken (and are still cranky that all five New Kids are still alive).

25. T. Rex
The discussion of our next band generated a few embarrassing admissions. A couple of us acknowledged that they first discovered T.Rex with the Power Station’s somewhat capable cover “Get it On” in the mid 80’s and accordingly worked our way backward. Regardless, of how we discovered them, we are all glad we did.

26. Joy Division
As seen with our sixth selection the NIHOF committee elected to separate New Order and Joy Division. We may reevaluate that decision one day, but considering the separate “life of its own” that Joy Division appears to be garnishing lately; it made more sense to us to create individual entries.

28. Yes
The twenty eighth selection returns us back to the never ending Rock and Roll Hall of Fame question of inducting Progressive Rock acts. As a key player in the Progressive Rock movement; Yes was an impressive outfit regardless of which lineup they had.

29. The Steve Miller Band
The NIHOF Committee wonders if other people feel the same way about our next selection. All five of us were fans of the Steve Miller Band, though none of us could really say that Miller was one of all time favorites or a must see on the concert tour. The Steve Miller Band certainly has a solid fan base, though based on our little cross section the fan base is not a passionate one.

30. Bon Jovi
Considering the vast amount of artists discussed here, only a small handful of them have achieved success through out their twenty five years awaiting eligibility. Even less on this list could sell out an arena internationally. Not only has Bon Jovi accomplished both feats; they could very well be the only group on this list with the best shot of maintaining that status over the next twenty five years.

"1. Rush
We said when we started this project, that we would make this as interactive a list as possible. In our first year, we narrowed down all the great bands available to two: Kraftwerk and Rush, in which we eventually went Germany over Canada. Although, we did receive more support than we thought we would for Kraftwerk at number one, there was more overall positive votes for Rush, and thus we are officially trading in the German brew and bratwurst for Molson and back bacon, and we present Rush as our top selection for a sophmore edition of the Rock and Roll list.

2. Kraftwerk
The inaugural number one selection, remains at number two. The initial holder of the sardonic title of “the most deserving band or artist who should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame who is currently not in”, may once again top our list despite being a band with limited commercial appeal; weak North American sales; are largely unknown to most people, did not speak English as their first language and quite frankly has a remote chance at best to receive induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. These German innovators may define best the Rock and Roll HOF’s induction criteria which includes “the influence and significance of the artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll”. Wait, why did they drop from the top slot again?

3. Kiss
We have strong suspicions that this selection and first American group will likely generate the most polarizing opinions as to whether or not they are Hall worthy. We also suspect that KISS is the most widely known band on this list too.

4. Deep Purple
When the idea for this website was in its infancy, the first thing we did was figure out all the eligible artists who are not in the Hall. Many elicited a surprised reaction that they were not enshrined, but Deep Purple received the biggest “they aren’t in yet?” reaction from us. As we discussed the idea of this site with others, Deep Purple’s omission continued to get the most surprised reaction. Considering that budding musicians still cut their teeth to “Smoke on the Water” it is easy to understand why people feel that way about Deep Purple. Probably more than any other band on this list, they just “feel” like they belong in a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

5. The Red Hot Chili Peppers
The NIHOF committee couldn’t agree on very much unanimously. We did however all believe that entering their first year of eligibility; The Red Hot Chili Peppers was as almost as close to a lock to being a first ballot inductee to the Hall. We were wrong, but we don’t think their wait will be a long one.

So are the Beastie Boys, but they're in.

Rush and Kiss belong in the HOF. Without a doubt.
