Quote : | "1.) Police Unions: Police departments across the country have become dependent on federal drug war grants to finance their budget. In March, we published a story revealing that a police union lobbyist in California coordinated the effort to defeat Prop 19, a ballot measure in 2010 to legalize marijuana, while helping his police department clients collect tens of millions in federal marijuana-eradication grants. And it’s not just in California. Federal lobbying disclosures show that other police union lobbyists have pushed for stiffer penalties for marijuana-related crimes nationwide.
2.) Private Prisons Corporations: Private prison corporations make millions by incarcerating people who have been imprisoned for drug crimes, including marijuana. As Republic Report’s Matt Stoller noted last year, Corrections Corporation of America, one of the largest for-profit prison companies, revealed in a regulatory filing that continuing the drug war is part in parcel to their business strategy. Prison companies have spent millions bankrolling pro-drug war politicians and have used secretive front groups, like the American Legislative Exchange Council, to pass harsh sentencing requirements for drug crimes.
3.) Alcohol and Beer Companies: Fearing competition for the dollars Americans spend on leisure, alcohol and tobacco interests have lobbied to keep marijuana out of reach. For instance, the California Beer & Beverage Distributors contributed campaign contributions to a committee set up to prevent marijuana from being legalized and taxed.
4.) Pharmaceutical Corporations: Like the sin industries listed above, pharmaceutical interests would like to keep marijuana illegal so American don’t have the option of cheap medical alternatives to their products. Howard Wooldridge, a retired police officer who now lobbies the government to relax marijuana prohibition laws, told Republic Report that next to police unions, the “second biggest opponent on Capitol Hill is big PhRMA” because marijuana can replace “everything from Advil to Vicodin and other expensive pills.”
5.) Prison Guard Unions: Prison guard unions have a vested interest in keeping people behind bars just like for-profit prison companies. In 2008, the California Correctional Peace Officers Association spent a whopping $1 million to defeat a measure that would have “reduced sentences and parole times for nonviolent drug offenders while emphasizing drug treatment over prison.”" |

It's not about public safety. It's not about the children. It's about people that have built their lives around imprisoning innocent people. Land of the free, home of the brave. 4/20/2012 5:43:18 PM

was this inspired by my post in the psychiatric thread?
please say yes!
also this is like america 101. if someone is making money, it is sacrilege to pass a law that would change that. like: http://www.pcworld.com/article/121832/public_broadband_hits_speed_bumps.html public fiberoptics network is stopped by time warner cable.

Man I feel sorry for the people that choose to pay out of the wazzoo for Marijuana when they can just buy advil and not have the side effect of lung cancer. Why would anybody do that? I mean beside potheads. 4/20/2012 6:45:43 PM

Okay, oral cancer, and not inhaling it reduces its effectiveness. Either way, you'd have to be ridiculous to prefer using marijuana as a pain reliever over Advil. Unless you were a pothead. 4/20/2012 6:55:46 PM

Brownies and Marinol capsules give you oral cancer?

I'm sure advil would've sent this guy into remission too.

You sound like a fucking D.A.R.E. officer that has exactly zero real world experience with marijuana.
And what ^ said.

I'll be fine with legalizing it as long as there is a reliable roadside test for it, and driving while high is treated just like drunk driving.
Because fuck high drivers.

Marinol is a legal pharmaceutical product that you have to have a prescription for, so I'm not sure what you're arguing about. It's a drug just like Advil, and won't get you high unless you consume it in large quantities; for most people.

I don't care either way. One thing that I have always wondered though is what happens after weed is legalized? What do people start asking for then? Heroin? Cocaine? LSD? 4/21/2012 12:33:50 AM

Right, but it keeps you from eating and keeping food down. Hence, the reason for using marijuana. 4/21/2012 10:38:42 AM

Good point, but I was just going off what that link he posted said, where he said he tried it to control the vomiting and nausea he was having and it worked and he's still in remission. But honestly, I know very little about the side effect of marinol so that could not be the case for most people like you said. I know my friend smokes it to give himself an appetite (among other things... obviously) because he's always been a pretty small guy and never did eat much. 4/21/2012 11:30:23 AM
