i left mine running once, right after a jump. i, too, was afraid it wouldn't start back up.

otherwise, i just turn the engine off and enjoy a cig whilst i pump my gas.

Filling at a gas station is the most dangerous thing you do each day.

Remember, gasoline is a vapor. As you pump an explosive cloud is forming at your feet.

Reason why they ban cellphone use is because it might mess up the airplanes ability to fly, and it will crash straight into the gas station.

Yeah, I think the idea of cell phones igniting the vapor is silly, but static and sparks from a running engine is no joke.

Nevermind cigarettes...

I can understand doing it once if you're legitimately concerned that your car won't restart but doing it regularly is a whole new level of stupid, for a lot of reasons.

Why would he insist on it?

What's your friend look like? Because if I see that dumb motherfucker at a gas station I'm going to pass and find another one to fill up.

Back in the days of full-service gas stations, I knew a guy who owned a station and pumped gas with a lit cigarette every day for decades, without incident.

you could toss a cigarette into a pool of gasoline and it wouldn't ignite.

My former boss does it every time. I didn't realize it until we were riding together and he stopped for gas. I definitely decided to get out of the car while he was filling it up.

I don't get the cell phone thing though. I have no qualms on using my cell at the gas station.

my little chinese friend will keep the car running, get out, put the pump in, and get back in the car, and then get back out to turn it off, all while on the cell phone. All she needs now is a cigarette and its bye bye. That's already 3 strikes, cellphone, static electricity and car running.
