Lost my car key (all keys actually). Don't have a spare. Car is locked.
What can be done?
I know this is another country, so the available options might vary, but anything can help.
Called Toyota, they told me to bring the car to them. How will the towing company open and start my car? Hangar and hotwire?
Anybody had this happen to them or know of someone whom it happened to? What did you/they do?
Thanks.
Edit: I was thinking in terms of my previous car, which was an automatic. Since this is manual, all they have to do is lower the handbrake and then tow it, right? (gear is in neutral)

Towing company won't open it, they'll just tow it. Toyota dealership can order a duplicate key from the VIN number. 4/28/2012 8:03:40 AM

If the key is visible in the car, a good locksmith can make a key to match it just by looking at it. 4/28/2012 3:16:05 PM

If it were almost anybody else, I would surely agree, but I honestly think oepii really is that dumb.
How the fuck does he think towing normally happens? Does he think a tow company politely asks for the keys from the owner every time they need to move a vehicle. The entire industry of towing exists because people need to move cars without keys. That's literally what they do. Fucking dumbass. 4/28/2012 3:16:14 PM

Duh I know how towing works, you fattie.
Thing is all the people I was calling said the car had to be opened first and they couldn't do it. They were saying I had to get the car opened first by someone else, and then they could come and tow it to the dealership. Hence my post in the "What are you thinking now" thread, around that time.
It was really frustrating as I was on the phone for 4 hours calling Toyota and towing company and local flavor of the AAA that I have a membership in. The latter was saying my membership doesn't cover the case of a lost key, but that if the key was locked inside the car, they could come and open it for me. I was like WTF whether the key is inside or lost outside, it is the same procedure for you, so come and open the damn thing. And they were like no, sorry, situation not covered. I couldn't change my story; had I known that, I would have told them the key was inside.
Anyway, one of my students hooked me up with an expert key cutter who will come and open the car, and also make me a key! I didn't know that those regular key cutters who make copies of your home/office keys can also make car keys. Anyway, he is coming in the evening to my place.
Problem is this situation happened at the same time as a prolapsed disc (in too much pain since Saturday morning; can't sit; can stand and walk with a limp; can't get to my physiotherapist till Monday afternoon) and a critical work week when I can't take a day off. Add to that loads of marking for which I need to sit and mark.

One time I locked my keys in my car, in the ignition, with the car running at a gas station.

what about the chip inside the key though? if he can cut you a key that works, you might get in the car, but you won't be starting it up. 4/29/2012 9:09:05 AM

as a side note, is it true that if you leave your car in four-wheel-drive it can't be towed, or will be fucked up if they try to tow it? 4/29/2012 9:12:35 AM
