Hook the kids in high school/college by offering them easier binge drinking opportunities. Fucking gold.

The overreaction people have to "binge" drinking is almost as bad as the hysteria of internet bullying.

^^^ I don't think they're expecting every kid to become a Miller Lite drinker because of this. My guess is that they're thinking of kids making a quick stop by the gas station/grocery store on the way to a party/beach/tailgating event, are in a hurry to get fucked up and say, "lets get the Miller Lite shotgun beer."

Bottom line is that this gimmick will more than likely give them a few extra Miller Lite lifetime drinkers. So it's a win. They are behind Bud Light/Bud/Coors Light...and something like this is actually different (the Vortex thing was pretty dumb).

Miller Lite scientists need to get back to studying which is its top attribute: whether it is the "tastes great" or the "less filling".

No no, Power Owl is a Harry Potter drinking game. You take a sip of beer everytime Harry's owl makes an appearance.

I'd like to see one of the mega-brewers actually put out a decent tasting beer rather than constantly fucking with the packaging.

imho miller IS the most drinkable beer produced on that scale.

You have to look at the status of the economy and the money.

It's more profitable to not do anything yet wow a couple people into buying miller over budweiser with a gimmick that costs the price of the machine that punches a punchtop into a can.

[Edited on April 30, 2012 at 1:03 PM. Reason : actually it's probably just a solidworks can-top design that is different and uses the same machine]

It's a no-lose situation for Miller.

First...the mega-breweries are never going to change their beer or make new ones. They are making too much money.

Second...they're not going to change the minds of older (at least 25 and up) people who already have their set beer. You don't have many people switching from Bud Light to Miller Lite at the age of 30.

You can only try to influence the kids who are just starting to drink...which is where this is aimed.

It will definitely do well on college campuses especially ones with a strong drinking culture like penn st.

NCSU has a pretty muted drinking culture compared with other schools.

While I agree, what they can do (and have done) is buy microbrews to capture that profit/market. My fear is that the macrobeweries will end up ruining the goodness of microbrews. I also wouldn't be surprised to see macrobrews try to use lobbyists (e.g. laws and regulations) to keep microbrews from opening/expanding.

i agree. except the status of the economy doesn't really matter. if miller lite, or any company, can gain customers and increase revenue by making a very slight change that costs them very little they will always do it..regardless of the state of the economy.

Pretty sure they just made the top really thin. I don't think they included a specific "can-popping" tool.

Really?? He quoted me as saying that they wouldn't change their beers or come up with new ones. They didn't change Bud Light and Platinum is essentially a Bud Light with higher alcohol content. Not exactly a revolutionary new beer.

First off Bud/Miller/Coors come out with new products all the time, so that part of your post was patently false. Secondly nobody was arguing that InBev was going to replace Bud Light with Bud Light Platinum...calling Bud Light Platinum a success in no way implies that it will replace Bud Light.

The risk involved is 0% meaning the economy sucks and they don't want to do anything risky.
The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward....or loss.

The market is already saturated with beer drinkers. Most people that drink anything in the budlight/ miller lite class of beers just need the 0.000001% motivation such as a punch top to persuade them to move their hand right to the miller light case instead of left to the bud light case.

If they were failing, like dominos was failing in pizza sales, a revamping of their entire pizza recipe was a successful idea. They rode on it for a good two years before they came out with they next big risky move "No you can't change the toppings on our pre-made pizzas" which will most likely bomb

I've always preferred making a small hole near the top of a beer and then drinking through the intended mouth hole. less spillage and better speed.
