What say you, TWW? I always thought it was tacky. Have the tides changed?

It's times like this that I really miss joe17669... I could always bounce these types of ideas off of him, and vice versa.

Now, I will have to rely on TWW females, seeing how the males on TWW are a bunch of classless hacks.

Wait, what specifically are you talking about?

A removable collar?

A shirt that has buttons on the collar tips instead of stays?

Just wearing a shirt & tie in general, or wearing them alone without a jacket?

I'M SO CONFUSED

Wearing a dress shirt is fine.

Wearing shirt + tie + jacket is fine.

Wearing just the shirt & tie is tacky.

Any collar that buttons down is verboten.

I think it looks good... provided you wear a decent pattern on the shirt and tie.... IE they compliment.... if that's what you're worried about; you're probably okay.... or totally off your rocker and wearing novelty ties to serious settings...

i mean if you're some fashion model on a runway or something sure whatever, but if you show up for a business meeting and care about something like that, you're probably a shitty businessman who needs to get his priorities straight

1) Don't take advice from hipsters who don't know what a button down collar is.
2) When in doubt, listen to DivaBaby19

Who cares what your coworker thinks. Most women think it looks sloppy unbuttoned.

i often end up with the button down + tie, with the neck unbuttoned and maximum sleeve rollage. its the "i've already put in a hard day's work" look..

They should always be buttoned unless you are some kind of lazy bum who doesn't know how to wear a dress shirt. I usually only wear button collars if I am wearing a tie as well, more a matter of personal preference since it's fine to them without a tie. But I was taught that they should always be buttoned, with or without tie. It looks really sloppy if you have a button collar and you aren't using it.

But what do I know, I prefer cargo shorts over pink salmon nut-huggers

If you enjoy looking like a Congressman from a shitty flyover state, go for it. Personally I never wear a polo/button down collar with a suit because I think it's aesthetically abhorrent. I will wear one with a tie or bowtie with a casual jacket or blazer.

I grew up wearing button down collars cause thats what my dad wears, I realized late there was another option and I think I probably haven't bought a shirt like that in 8 years or so

This a million times this. Unless its the classic black tie tux a bow tie makes you look like a dope or a tool (often both).

^^^^^ Agreed. Bowties as a hip fashion statement are

I have 1 (maybe 2) shirts with a button collar. I stay away from them if at all possible, I think they just aren't as comfortable because you always have that high collar rubbing your neck.

EMCE realistically you will never have to worry about looking like a Congressman from a shitty flyover state because they don't elect black people to office.

[Edited on May 1, 2012 at 11:12 PM. Reason : except JC Watts, but he was one of the good ones, ya know...]

[Edited on May 1, 2012 at 11:14 PM. Reason : Fun fact. Did you know that according to Wikipedia, JC stood for Julius Caesar? HAHAHA.]
