What pisses me off is that over the last year or so, I've heard a few times on TV about Jesse Jackson and some other blacks complaining that there aren't enough African Americans in MLB.
It's not some racial thing Jesse. Perhaps African Americans just aren't as good at baseball or they chose other sports. Who cares.
You don't see the white community bitching that there aren't enough whites in the NBA. Last time I checked it was around 85% African American. 5/2/2012 1:28:42 PM

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/dailypitch/post/2012/04/mlb-jackie-robinson-day-african-american-players/1#.T6FvkbMS2Ag
Good article on the subject.
Quote : | "ST. LOUIS -- Major League Baseball, celebrating Jackie Robinson Day Sunday, has the lowest percentage of African-American players since the earliest days of the sport's integration, according to research conducted by USA TODAY Sports.
The African-American percentage in baseball this season has dropped to 8.05%, which is less than half the percentage of 17.25% in 1959 when the Boston Red Sox became the last team to integrate their roster. It's down from 8.5% last season, and a dramatic decline from the peak of 1975, when 27% of all rosters were African-American. Even as late as 1995, the percentage was 19%.
"Baseball likes to say things are getting better,'' says former 20-game winner and front-office executive Dave Stewart, who's now an agent. "It's not getting better. It's only getting worse. We've been in a downward spiral for a long time, and the numbers just keep declining.''
Ten teams opened the year with no more than one African-American on their opening-day roster. There are nearly 30 more players from the Dominican Republic than the total of African-American players. Foreign-born players account for 28.4% of members of opening-day rosters.
The New York Yankees, Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers account for nearly 25% of all African-Americans in baseball, while Cubs center fielder Marlon Byrd is the lone African-American major leaguer in the city of Chicago.
"I don't even know what to say,'' said Byrd, the only African-American on the field Sunday at Busch Stadium in St. Louis during the 65th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier.
"I remember when I came up with the Phillies in 2002, we had six [African-American] players. I thought that was the norm. Now, you look around, and don't see anyone.
"Will it change? I don't know. I'm hoping it's a different story four or five years from now.''
Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, aware of the dwindling numbers, said the sport is diligently trying to reverse the trend with their urban academies and annual Civil Rights Game.
"We trying to get better. It won't happen overnight,'' Selig said. "And we're very comfortable saying it will be better. We are doing great work with our baseball academies and working in the inner-cities. It's getting better.''
While African-Americans are dwindling on the field, Selig said he's pleased with the diversity of front offices. Still, Kenny Williams of the Chicago White Sox and Michael Hill of the Miami Marlins are the lone African-American general managers, and Dusty Baker of Cincinnati and Ron Washington of Texas are the only African-American managers.
"I remember Jackie saying 10 days before he passed [in 1972],'' Selig said, "he wouldn't be satisfied until we had a black manager and general manager. If he went through all of our front offices today in baseball, he'd be proud.''" |

Tree's rotational doesn't have any guards off the bench. And this is child's play; the real challenge is to craft a team of all American white players.
RULES: 5 starters, one backup point, one backup wing, one backup big
1 Heinrich 2 Miller 3 Buddinger 4 Love 5 Lee
6 Ridnour 7 Heyward 8 Birdman

You're pretty much a self professed racist, but this is one thing old Jessie has right. MLB absolutely needs to support the inner city more and in recent years they have gotten better at it. It hurts the sport when a segment of the population is lost because the professional league didn't do a good enough job providing the infrastructure to an entire class of people.

Thing is though, given what we know about the distinct genetic advantages in most American blacks, basketball and football offer greater potential for success. The ideal physical specimen, say 6'3", 200, 4.5 speed, would fare equally well as a point guard, wide receiver or centerfielder, given an appropriate background in each ( a la Carl Crawford). But beyond that, blacks don't possess any inherent advantages in baseball like they do in basketball in regards to explosiveness, speed, and quick twitch ability. If anything, its the major American sport where athleticism is least important, rendering black's main advantage over the rest of the population as less of a factor. No white cornerbacks, no black catchers. Its better to just accept the way things are instead of continuing to look for that next Jason Sehorn or Charles Johnson.

I don't see any infrastructure for football or basketball.
It's not the responsibility of the major sports to target a recruit a certain segment of the population.
Now that would be racist.
These "inner city" people you are referring to are given a choice of what sport to play for the most part. Football, baseball, or basketball. There is a reason there aren't more blacks in MLB, and it has nothing to do with race.
My point was, that just because there aren't that many African Americans in MLB doesn't mean it's a bad thing. Most choose football and basketball because they are more "glamorous" and pay more. Like I said, the NBA is around 15% white, and has been as low as 8% too, yet nobody is up in a hoopla saying there needs to be more white people in the NBA.
If someone came out and said there needed to be more white people in any sport, then they would immediately be labeled a racist, yet blacks can do it and it's seen as a good thing.
Bullshit.
You keep calling me a "racist" which is hilarious, because I basically do the same thing blacks do, I just reverse it, which basically proves my point.
Thanks. 5/2/2012 5:09:49 PM

Not when you break it down to games played.
I'd also argue, that its harder to make it to MLB.
Most young men don't wanna spend a few years grinding out in the minors of a sport when if they are good at football or basketball, they can get drafted and immediately paid/play.
Also the top pick of the MLB draft, up until recently with the new CBA in the NFL, got around 6.5mil.
Compare that to the top pick in the NFL and its laughable.
Also, the NBA hands out ~$15mil a year like its a joke.

NFL contracts aren't guaranteed, and only about 6% of NFL players have careers longer than 4 seasons
The NBA does indeed hand out money like its nothing, but they also have a salary cap, unlike baseball
