i dunno about a snapping turtle, but i always pull over and move turtles to the other side of the road. my mom told me that's what my grandpa used to do but he's been dead since i was about 5, so i try to make him proud.

when i was a kid i used to throw the little rocks i found in the yard into the woods behind my house. one time i hit a squirrel and i heard a little scream from it as it fell to the ground.

i remember as a kid the first time i saw a dead turtle in the road. i was pretty mystified, because before then, i thought they were completely invincible.

It's a pretty sad time of year for turtle lovers. If you come across a turtle soon after it was hit and it's not completely flattened, you can check for eggs. I've incubated eggs from turtles I found hit on the road and hatched them before. It's the best you can make of a shitty situation.

Indeed it is... I was going to post about this over on the Soap Box, but maybe it is time that we institute the capital punishment for anyone that runs over a turtle. While our elected officials are at it, they should also pass a turtle amendment that says the only domestic legal union recognized by the state is between 1 male 1 female turtle marriage.

i hit a snapper once and cried for days afterwards cuz i had to keep passing it's carcass. it was crossing a 6 lane highway where there had been a flood and the turtle was covered in the same mud that the road was covered in. i tried to swerve but it was unsafe due to the only other car on the highway for 5 miles in either direction. my dad wouldn't let me stop to see if it could have been saved.

^^you don't really need much, other than to dig a spot in the dirt near the edge of the woods, then cover them. Although I use an incubator.

i moved a snake and turtle out of the road not too long ago. i don't know much about which snakes are dangerous, so i just grabbed the back end and slung it.

If you move one out of the road make sure you put it on the side it was trying to get to. Seems obvious to some people, but if it's only a foot or two into the roadway most people will take it to the side it is closest to rather than the side it was trying to get to. If you don't it'll just walk right back out into the street when you drive away.

Inattentive drivers piss me off all the time. Saw a guy hit a dog last summer on a straight country road in the middle of a bright sunny day. Completely pointless. I saw that dog from 1/4 mile away.

I hit a squirrel once as a teenager and just cried and cried over it. It was awful.

I live in the country, so I'm always on the lookout for wife life. I regularly have to avoid deer and the occasional fox or bear. And don't even get me started on the chickens, turkeys, guineas, and ducks that folks just let run loose. I have definitely hit a few possum -- those suckers come out of nowhere and there's not a lot that you can do about it.

Every time I can, I stop and move turtles out of the road.
