" Romney’s wife, Ann, was in attendance, and the candidate spoke of the concern he had for her when her plane had to make an emergency landing Friday en route to Santa Monica because of an electrical malfunction.

“I appreciate the fact that she is on the ground, safe and sound. And I don’t think she knows just how worried some of us were,” Romney said. “When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go, exactly, there’s no — and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that. It’s a real problem. So it’s very dangerous. And she was choking and rubbing her eyes. Fortunately, there was enough oxygen for the pilot and copilot to make a safe landing in Denver. But she’s safe and sound.”"

It sucks for Mccain he had to run against Obama in 2008. He had really high favorability ratings, and probably would have won any other time if he were the nominee.

The GOP lost a huge opportunity not running him in 2000. Our political landscape would have been very different now.

I find Obama's numbers in that graphic to be more telling than Romney's.

If the election were held today, Obama would have a 95.6% chance of winning:

I don't really expect an old man who's been a politician for years to know why a plane window can't be opened.

I do. It's pretty fucking obvious for anyone who has taken a middle school science class. And I don't want the president deciding any kind of policy while not knowing something as simple as this. The president is supposed to be the absolute best that America can put forward and mitt Romney is clearly not that person nor does he come anywhere close.

I'm not disputing that Romney shouldn't be president.

But merely wishing his wife could open an airplane window as a fire was building inside during an emergency landing doesn't really demonstrate this.

There are smaller private planes that have openable windows.

It's not too far fetched for him to wonder why jets don't also have the same...

There are plenty of things to mock Romney for than what should be an innocuous statement, it just looks desperate when you pick on the irrelevant things.

It's like the right pretending that the TelePrompTer things is a real issue for Obama, or pointing out the way he wears a flag pin.

The real test is how he reacts to why the plane is built the way it is. If he does what he did when asked about the 47% comment, or what he's doing now when asked why his campaign is in shambles, then he's dumber than i give him credit for.

I don't actually understand the science behind why some planes don't have windows that open. But it is commonsense. And there are three different very uninformed lines of thinking that would prevent a person from making those remarks:

1) Realize you don't know anything about the subject and keep your mouth shut until you can get to a book.
2) Realize there's no way you've stumbled on a potential "problem" in planes that hasn't already been considered by hundreds of thousands of actual aerospace experts.
3) Realize that opening a window on a plane 35,000 feet up in the air and going 500 miles per hour would likely do something undesirable.

It's dumb to fail at number 3. It's arrogant to fail at number 2. And it's just bad politics to drop the ball on number 1. It reminds me of the apocryphal (but perceptive) story about GWB actually remarking out loud that Brazil has black people too.

But politicians, especially presidents, are rarely experts in any field, other than politics. They routinely bloviate about topics which they have only memorized a few bits of information about in order to give a speech on.

Does anyone really think Obama knows anything about the machinations of the health an insurance industry? Or how the economic system works? Or knows details about military strategy? Has he studied the nuances of the Mexican drug gangs to make a decision on best ways to fight that war?

He has to get all his ideas from his advisors.

The people advising Romney are obviously incompetent, but this seems like something more off-the-cuff, and to me, isn't too for someone of his stature to say (assuming he admits it was dumb to say, after being apprised of why).

IOW, just give him a break. It'll make you look more gracious the next time he really puts his foot in his mouth.

It's the internet. I mean, I'm not going to call my friend and be like, "OMG, did you hear what Romney said about planes?!? LOLOLOL, WHAT AN IDIOT!"

But, yes, I do think Obama does understand health insurance, the economy, drug cartels, etc... That's his job, dude.

I think you're giving him too much credit. Do you think even he read the entire healthcare bill? I bet he doesn't even know all the aspects of it. but I don't expect him too-- it's too large an item for a single person who has other things to do to really know (it was written by a committee of experts for a committee of experts). He probably knows the important or relevant bits for campaigning, then moves on to the next thing.

It's just like how my boss doesn't know exactly how I do the things I do, he just knows that I do them, then asks me enough questions to talk about it in meetings with the higher ups. It would be unreasonable for him to know the details of my work beyond the surface, let alone the details of all the people that work under him.

He hasn't yet shown himself to be a wonk or true philosopher of politics, I don't really believe he knows the depth of very many issues. He must delegate these aspects to is advisors/czars.

I think Obama is familiar enough with most significant policies to be able to hold a candid conversation and explain his reasoning for thinking a certain way. He could probably also give you a basic rundown of why opening the window of a jet plane is a bad idea.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-57520009-503544/romney-teacher-contributions-to-politicians-should-be-limited/

This pisses me off:

Quote :
"He later added that "we simply can't have" elected officials who have received large contributions from teachers sitting across from them at the bargaining table "supposedly" to represent the interests of children. "I think it's a mistake," Romney said. "I think we have to get the money out of the teachers unions going into campaigns. It's the wrong way for us to go. We've got to separate that.""

This coming from a guy whose campaign is primarily funded primarily by a few billionaire donors. I'm pretty sure that companies that showered law-makers with lobbying dollars get to sit across the table from the DoD when they get handed billion dollar contracts. How are public worker unions different from private sector companies?

Re: 2012 Presidential Debates

In a matter of days, Governor Romney and President Obama will meet on the presidential debate stage. President Obama is a universally-acclaimed public speaker and has substantial debate experience under his belt. However, the record he's compiled over the last four years – higher unemployment, lower incomes, rising energy costs, and a national debt spiraling out of control – means this will be a close election right up to November 6th.

Between now and then, President Obama and Governor Romney will debate three times. While Governor Romney has the issues and the facts on his side, President Obama enters these contests with a significant advantage on a number of fronts.

Voters already believe – by a 25-point margin – that President Obama is likely to do a better job in these debates. Given President Obama's natural gifts and extensive seasoning under the bright lights of the debate stage, this is unsurprising. President Obama is a uniquely gifted speaker, and is widely regarded as one of the most talented political communicators in modern history. This will be the eighth one-on-one presidential debate of his political career. For Mitt Romney, it will be his first.

Four years ago, Barack Obama faced John McCain on the debate stage. According to Gallup, voters judged him the winner of each debate by double-digit margins, and their polling showed he won one debate by an astounding 33-point margin. In the 2008 primary, he faced Hillary Clinton, another formidable opponent – debating her one-on-one numerous times and coming out ahead. The takeaway? Not only has President Obama gained valuable experience in these debates, he also won them comfortably.

But what must President Obama overcome? His record. Based on the campaign he's run so far, it's clear that President Obama will use his ample rhetorical gifts and debating experience to one end: attacking Mitt Romney. Since he won't – and can't – talk about his record, he'll talk about Mitt Romney. We fully expect a 90-minute attack ad aimed at tearing down his opponent. If President Obama is as negative as we expect, he will have missed an opportunity to let the American people know his vision for the next four years and the policies he'd pursue. That's not an opportunity Mitt Romney will pass up. He will talk about the big choice in this election – the choice between President Obama's government-centric vision and Mitt Romney's vision for an opportunity society with more jobs, higher take-home pay, a better-educated workforce, and millions of Americans lifted out of poverty into the middle class.

This election will not be decided by the debates, however. It will be decided by the American people. Regardless of who comes out on top in these debates, they know we can't afford another four years like the last four years. And they will ultimately choose a better future by electing Mitt Romney to be our next president. "

tl;dr: romney campaign releases memo on why he will lose the debate - because obama is mean and experienced

Something as simple as not knowing how many states are in the US? or mispronouncing "corpsman" as corps-man? Neither of which BO knew.

He is filthy rich for one of many reasons, least of which is he has reasonably high intelligence what I assume from his record.

basically smart does not equal filthy rich

I wish people would stop using the correlation that there are smart filthy rich people as the cause of their wealth. In most cases it takes more than intelligence to make multi millions of dollars.
