does anyone have a setup to do this for me? My grandmother has a video of me as a kid and i'd like to burn a DVD with it for her and my mom. I'd rather not send the video off to one of those services because it's one of a kind and if they lost it then it would be gone forever.

who wants to help me out for cheap?

I've got a very nice rig for this at my school. What's your budget for this?

i don't really have a budget... i could send a tape off for somewhere around 10-20 bucks... i would pay around the same if i could just bring it to someone to do right then and there.

i'm also going to check at work to see if any of the AV nerds can do it for me for free (I work at a high school)

Most dv camcorders can act as a dv bridge.

Find digital camcorder
Get composite-> 3.5mm cable
Put camcorder into bridge mode (usually done by removing the tape and set to record mode)
Connect camcorder to computer
Connect VCR to camcorder with the composite 3.5mm cable
Fire up iMovie
Play tape
Begin recording on the computer

you can get an ancient tv tuner card (even a usb model) that doesn't work with newer ATSC stuff and connect your vcr to it and record it on a computer and burn/upload to youtube/etc. the effort and cost is probably more than the $10 to pay someone

I'll do it for any denomination of Mountain Dew Livewire greater than a single can.
