Russell Wilson opens eyes at camp
ESPN.com news services

RENTON, Wash. -- Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Sunday that rookie quarterback Russell Wilson will compete in training camp for the starting job with Matt Flynn and Tarvaris Jackson.
NFC West Blog

ESPN.com's Mike Sando writes about all things NFC West in his division blog.

• Network: NFL Nation
Carroll made his decision after watching Wilson compete at the team's just completed three-day rookie minicamp. The Seahawks coach said Russell took 500 snaps and threw approximately 400 passes during the three days.
"He's showed us enough," Carroll told reporters. "He's in the competition. And that is going to tax us, as you know. It was already going to be taxing with two. But he's shown us enough that we need to see where he fits in with these guys."
The Seahawks drafted Wilson out of Wisconsin in the third round of this year's draft. Flynn, a former Green Bay Packers backup, signed a three-year, $26 million contract with $10 million guaranteed earlier this offseason. Jackson started much of last season.
Carroll said deciding on a starting quarterback will be a long process.
"It's going to take us a long time to do this," he told reporters. "It's going to be frustrating for (the media). You're going to keep asking and want to know. I'm just going to be more patient than you can imagine as we go through this process, and we'll just figure it out when we do."
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report."

But he'll never see a snap in the NFL

He was a 3rd round draft pick and it's not like Flynn is Luck/RGIII/Newton. I don't know why people are acting like this is a big deal.

I expect Flynn to start based on pay and if Wilson shows enough to be starter-potential, they'll cut ties with Jackson.

Me too!!!!!

I'm Already eating major crow that he even got drafted, and I'll eat plenty more if he plays. Between him and Cam, my quarterback scouting instincts have been shit lately.

Do they make you say the school you were drafted from? He does have a degree from NC State, so it wouldn't be a stretch to let him say that was his school.

Why would you have a problem with him repping Wisconsin? They accepted him under the same conditions that caused us to kick him to the curb.

It would be awesome if the seahawks drafted Glennon next year so they could duel it out.

Flynn should get the starting job though bc he's got $10MM guaranteed and they need to find out what he's got first.

But at only $10 guaranteed they won't be hesitant to trade him or cut him if in the offseason if he struggles and RW emerges during the season.

No reason to rush RW in as the starter though unless he's clearly much better or if flynn gets hurt. Let him develop and observe a little first. I don't expect tavaris to get much of an opportunity to win the starting job though and wouldn't be surprised if RW is the backup.

I thought it was 10 Mill guaranteed over the duration of the deal with incentives putting it up to 30 mill...10 mil is just a good back up salary these days...look at T-Jack. he gets 4 mill/year

whitehurst was getting similar

^ The contract as I understand it is 3 yrs, $26 million with $10M being guaranteed. There may be a few incentives in there but most incentives in football involve still being on the roster on a certain date and/or doing minor things like attending minicamps.

This means if he is on the roster he will be making ~$9M per year. If RW is better than Flynn you can bet they will not keep him as a backup QB for more than one season at $9M per season. At that point they will trade Flynn to a team desperate for a QB or cut him and eat the ~6.7M left that they owe him.

WOW. These guys nailed it on Cam Newton last year so this is certainly meaningful.

Quote :
"In March, we posted an article on our website about the Lewin Career Forecast numbers of 2012 quarterback prospects, and we dubbed Russell Wilson “The Asterisk.” Wilson’s college stats blew LCF away: 48 college games started, a 60.7 percent completion rate, and most importantly, an absurd 64.1 jump in passer rating between his junior and senior seasons. Wilson would have the best LCF forecast of all-time if he were drafted in the first three rounds. But at that point, nobody thought he was going in the first three rounds. Thus, “The Asterisk.”
Well, guess what? The Asterisk was drafted in the third round by the Seattle Seahawks and, if you believe Pete Carroll, will even get a shot to compete for the Seahawks’ starting job in training camp. So officially, it is now Russell Wilson, not Robert Griffin, who has the highest LCF forecast ever. Nevertheless, he is still The Asterisk, because there are a couple of elements here that the Lewin Career Forecast does not account for. First, that big leap in passer rating was less the product of Wilson’s own improvement and more the product of his transfer from North Carolina State to Wisconsin, where defenses were focused on stopping Montee Ball instead of Wilson. Second, we simply have no way to control for Wilson’s height. Teams don’t draft short quarterbacks unless they are really, really confident in their abilities. Since 1991, Wilson is the only quarterback under six feet tall to be drafted in the first three rounds. Even if we raise that limit to six-foot even, only three quarterbacks have been drafted in the first three rounds: Wilson, Michael Vick, and Drew Brees.

Brees, of course, is the quarterback Wilson is often compared to. The Saints offense built around Drew Brees provides a fine template for designing an offense that takes advantage of Wilson’s mobility and perfect throw-and-go timing while minimizing the issue of his height.1 Wilson’s game must focus on manipulation of the pocket and the secondary with the help of movement: play action, short drops, bootlegs, partial rolls, and misdirection. Wilson also excels at delivering the football to a spot where only the receiver has a chance to make a play on it. And if the play breaks down, he can run; he gained 483 yards on just 56 non-sack carries in 2011, and had career +41.3 Adj. POE as a runner.

The Lewin Career Forecast is just a guideline, not a gospel. Nobody would suggest that Russell Wilson is a better quarterback prospect than Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin. But Wilson can win in the NFL if he has an offensive coordinator who knows how to take advantage of his skills."
