"including Buchanan’s May 13, 1844, letter to a Mrs. Roosevelt. Describing his deteriorating social life after his great love, William Rufus King, senator from Alabama, had moved to Paris to become our ambassador to France, Buchanan wrote:

I am now “solitary and alone,” having no companion in the house with me. I have gone a wooing to several gentlemen, but have not succeeded with any one of them. I feel that it is not good for man to be alone; and should not be astonished to find myself married to some old maid who can nurse me when I am sick, provide good dinners for me when I am well, and not expect from me any very ardent or romantic affection."

James Buchanan apparently.

His lover was a senator from Al too, who then became an ambassador.

I wonder if the media just didn't know back then they were gay, or just didn't care?

It's weird to think the left/right politics weren't always as divisive as they are now...

What? Wiki says he did go to UNC. Where else did he go? Bob Jones University or something?

whaaaaat

this is in 1844. shootings on the floor the of the capital happen. if we have different politics, we'll duel and get it over with. And 20 years later, we're all at war with each other.

say what you want about politics today vs. back then, but a bunch of people bitching on the internet is hardly as divisive as taking up arms.

still the Dick in son college could be appropriate for Buchanan.

[Edited on May 15, 2012 at 10:26 AM. Reason : not his own son, that is...some other person's son. Like King. Yes?]

haha, best of both worlds:

The first gay President, a graduate of Dickinson College, having the buttsex with a graduate of UNC, where that tradition runs deep.

Also, King supported the Senate's gag rule.

I'm guessing he means the beatdown of Senator Charles Sumner with a cane. Which is kind of like a shooting... and happened in the 1850s

I knew about the beatdown.

I was unaware of anybody going Columbine in 1844 though.

moron, the term "homosexual" wouldn't even be coined for half a decade after that letter, and "gay" wouldn't get its present meaning until about 70 years after that; the notion of exclusive same-sex attraction wasn't really on anyone's radar until Richard von Krafft-Ebing started studying and writing about it.

Yankee Doodle Dandy

Quote :
"A macaroni (or formerly maccaroni)[1] in mid-18th century England, was a fashionable fellow who dressed and even spoke in an outlandishly affected and epicene manner. The term pejoratively referred to a man who "exceeded the ordinary bounds of fashion"[2] in terms of clothes, fastidious eating and gambling. Like a practitioner of macaronic verse, which mixed English and Latin to comic effect, he mixed Continental affectations with his English nature, laying himself open to satire:"
