I rode over to Theodore Roosevelt Island this past saturday, and this friendly little guy tried to come up and greet me. Later in my visit, he tried to come up and sit in my lap.

Remember with snakes if their head is pointed and v shaped (wider then thier neck) they are poisonous.

Most snake heads are "V" shaped, to some extent...even the harmless ones will flare their jaws out if they feel threatened.

A four year old relative of mine just got released from the hospital today, mostly recovered from stepping on a young copperhead. She remains unable to walk currently, but everything else is looking up.

venomous snakes have a diamond shaped head caused by the venom glands on the side of their jaw, nonvenomous snakes have a round head

I am 100% sure thats a copperhead... I had one with its mouth open posed to bite under my leg back in elementary school. Trust me, if I ever see one, I will try to kill it.

Little kid at a local daycare got bit by one... The "rumor" going around was that he needed 4 vials of antivenom at $30,000/vial.

Anyone know the going rate of antivenom? That number seemed a little exaggerated to me.

Seems a bit much given how common a snake it is, but I have no idea. Shit, aspirin is like $200/pill at the hospital, so maybe.

I know the cost depends on the type of snake. But insurance should cover most of the cost.

Just suck the venom out and rub some dirt on it.

Yeah rattlesnake bites are notoriously expensive to treat. Other bites seems to be cheaper according to the internets.

There are only six venomous types of snakes in NC. In Raleigh the Copperhead is the only snake you ever need to be able to identify. Everything else is non-venomous. OP provided a decent enough pic, but a google image search wouldn't hurt most people who need a refresher. They're pretty distinctive...After looking at pics online you'll know with 100% certainty when you actually see one. If you're not sure it's almost definitely a non-venomous water snake.

Go a further east and you might run across a Water Moccasin or a Coral Snake, but not here. When you hear someone say they killed a "Water Moccasin" around here it just means they killed a harmless water snake. Coral snakes are extremely rare, even in the areas of NC where they do exist. I've never seen one in the wild.

There are three types of rattlesnakes in NC, but if you have to question whether they're venomous you're just too dumb to ever figure it out, lol.

I have seen only one coral snake in the wild before. It was along the Lumber river on a canoe trip, and was small enough to use a pine cone to wrap around for sunning. Seriously doubt I would worry about its bite even if I were to see another one.

^ What part of the Lumber? If it was indeed a coral snake that is a pretty significant find.

well South of Lumberton, just North of Orrum. Had to paddle around to make sure it was actually what we thought we saw at first.
