I knew a girl who was bisexual (probably was a lug) named "Sunshine." She was from Washington, her brother was my roommate and they were from Washington state. They're strange ass hippies.

It is an Arabic name.

Meaning:

Safety
Security
Peace

Faithful
Trustworthy

[Edited on May 26, 2012 at 2:31 AM. Reason : the first meaning is a common misconception]

^WHAT?? How is that a misconception? I have talked to MANY muslims and Arabs who say that is what it means? I do like the faithful and trustworthy meaning. I strive to be that and not mess up on that. Being human sucks ass sometimes. I want to be faithful and trustworthy. I was talking to a friend the other day who said it means honesty. She, too, is muslim.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my name.

Thanks, ddk. I ♥ you! Check my status!

i will look into it...

there are many misconceptions about meanings about popular arabic words that westerners know. for example, you will hear people (muslims and non-muslims) saying that Islam means Peace, all the time. but that's completely false. the root for Peace is similar to Islam - it is Salam. Islam actually means Submission (Submission to Allah, of course).

as for your name, i will ask my brother. reason i will ask him and not my father or any of hundreds of other arabs and muslims i know is because my brother is fluent in Classical Arabic and knows all the ins and outs of the complicated syntax and semantics of Arabic. (he is a scholar-in-training)

Yeah, I guess. I have never seened it written, just heard.

Her husband is British, which could have something to do with the names.

Imogen is currently about as popular in the UK as Erica (my name) was back in the 80s. I don't think it's really a worthy name. And considering her husband is Brit, are you sure the name is Rihanna (like the pop star) or Rhianna (as in Rhiannon)? The names are completely different from an etymological standpoint. Ie. one is arabic and one is welsh.

You are right. And now that I think about it, it's too close to HARPO. Oprah spelled backwards. I am not a fan of Oprah.

I found out. I was wrong, you were right. There are two very similar names and I got confused between the two. Note however, that the spelling "Amna" cannot convey the correct Arabic pronunciation of the name. It is close enough though, and most people use it like that, including Arabs and Muslims.

So, here are the two names, first one being yours:

Amina
Pronunciation: A as in fAther, MI as in MInute, NA as in NArc
Meaning: one who feels safe/secure, one who is at peace

Ameena
Pronunciation: A as in cUt, MEE as in MEEt, NA as in NArc
Meaning: one who is trustworthy/honest, one who keeps promises
