One check for $250 Two checks for $125 each
Why? It was just 3 envelopes with checks in them, no explanation. Anyone else had this happen recently? 5/26/2012 3:04:18 PM |

It's the classic government scam. Give you $500, allow enough time for you to spend it, then say it was a "mistake" and ask for it back + interest.
Put it in an interest bearing account and hope that the account has a higher rate that what they'll charge you.
Just making stuff up btw.

There should be a number somewhere on what you were sent. Call em up. Document the call and go with what they ask you to do with the checks. If they hassle you later, give them the date/time you called and who you spoke with and maybe you'll have partially covered your ass. 5/26/2012 11:51:06 PM |

FAQ: I received a check from Treasury and I do not know why. How can I find out why it was sent to me?
Contact the Treasury Regional Financial Center (RFC) that issued the payment to you to determine which federal agency authorized the payment.
For identification purposes, the city and state of the RFC is printed on the top center of the check.

Call 800-829-1040 (IRS toll free number for individuals) on Tuesday and let them know what happened.
They may have found a mistake on one of your returns and made an adjustment which resulted in an overpayment of tax for the year. However, they do send you a letter to inform you of the adjustment before they send the refund out.
Other possibility is that it was an erroneous refund. See http://www.irs.gov/irm/part21/irm_21-004-005r.html for details. If this is the case they will ask you to send the refund back. 5/27/2012 4:56:20 PM |

This actually happens.
Did you owe taxes this year? Did you pay them? If you sent a check without proper paperwork/filing/etc., then they'll refund you that money and ask for it again later, with interest.5/29/2012 9:41:49 AM |
