for white people i guess "when" is close enough, but that's not how it is pronounced.

a real nguyen told me how to pronounce it.

she said think of the ng sound in "long island". start with that sound. i will write that sound as "ng".

so the pronunciation is ngu-when

^^amurricans, for the most part, cannot say that sound. my language has that sound as well and IIRC, only one person has gotten it correct.

I've always said "noo-en" because none of my viet friends have ever told me differently

IIRC the name looks like "NGOO-yenn" but is pronounced "NGWEE-enn"; BTW English actually does have that "ng" sound but just never uses it to start a word.
