seriously, i think g105 is about 50% adele, 25% outdated dance pop (im talkin shit from last summer like party rock anthem, AT LEAST PLAY ANOTHER SONG ON THE ALBUM FFS), and 25% "call me maybe". There are so many other NEW songs of the top 40 variety that could be played, but they're playing this same old shit over and over, i think their entire playlist is about 8 songs total.

thank god i'm moving to south florida, at least their radio stations have variety.

ibt 'why would you listen to the radio'.

93.9 is better than G105 for that sort of music imo. At least when they play old music it's stuff from the 80s that makes me nostalgic even if it's a crappy song

lol I was listening to the radio the other day and they played Nookie by Limp Bizkit. Seriously, who wants to listen to that song?

I 100% agree, and have tried emailing and calling local radio stations (94.7 and 96.1 do the exact same thing). All the stations respond with "just call in and request the song you want".

I dont know who in the world would want to listen to Adele 10-15 times a day? What is so maddening is the fact that when someone calls in to request a song, ITS USUALLY THE OVERPLAYED SONG they requested.

I have to listen to the radio, I drive other peoples cars every day.

^^^ im talking about the higher ups who get told by large corporations which songs to play. you'd think by now they would phase out songs from last year and play this summer's new hits.

also, i've had about enough of that song by "karmin". how did they get famous again? oh they had a decent cover on youtube, don't think that warrants a record deal.

Variety in South Florida = Latin jazz, Reggaetón, Cuban hip hop, Calypso, etc. Hope you speak Spanish.

Radio stations have what's called a Program Director. They pick the music, but typically they play what's popular (in terms of Top 40 stations, like G105 and WQDR). Stations like 96.1 will use market research groups to gather a sample of their target audience, collect them in a room and make them listen to hundreds and hundreds of 7-15sec clips of songs in their catalog, usually the "hook," or most well known part of a song, and have them say whether or not they like the song on a form. They then use that information to populate their playlist. Specifically speaking of 96.1, the program director is an idiot (I worked for him for a couple of years) and he is personally destroying rock radio in the triangle. I could tell you a few of his favorite bands, but you could probably figure that out just by listening...

That doesn't surprise me at all. Considering how horrible the station is now. I also like how they feel they need to pay their tagline after every two songs, just in case you forgot which shitty radio station you're listening to.

After they changed formats I would generally only listen to them for the traffic reports, but then I realized in the afternoons I could go my full 30 minute commute without once hearing a report. So now I only listen to them if NPR is boring me and everyone else is playing a song I dislike.

WKNC is only good when they're off their indie rock schedule. Geet Bazaar, bluegrass, metal, hiphop, punk, etc. All the stuff they never play during rush hour.

99.9 is hit and miss. The afternoon guys will often set up an inane argument and spend an entire hour or more browbeating it. Also if you aren't interested in the subject you might as well change the station because you know they'll be stuck talking about it for forever. I guess that's what it takes to fill their shifts but I'd prefer a format where the subject changes often, even if they just end up with an hour of material that's repeated 3 times.

I think it really depends on the DJ. Sometimes it can be a really good mix and sometimes it's utter shit. Like the guy they had last semester that had some sort of obsession with obscure French indie rock. It'd be one thing if the songs had a good beat but they didn't even have that going for them I haven't tried out the summer DJ lineup during my commute yet.

A few things.

First, he takes way to long to make a point. I realize he's a verbose lawyer with a journalistic background, but the dude goes all Jim Nantz the morning of the Masters' final day just to say "UNC won last night."

Second, commercials. I realize the ACC Sports Journal is his baby, but damn dude, hearing a commercial 4 times an hour for 3 hours is mindnumbing.

Third, Jimmy Buffett. He loves him. I hate him.

Fourth, there's some Blue bias there. Not really pro-UNC or pro-Duke, but definitely pro-Blue. I get it, those are most of his subscribers, but it's annoying.

Fifth, Hayes Permar. Yawn.

RALEIGH RADIO SUCKS. there is not a worse selection of music anywhere else in the country

When the two best stations are sports radio ( 99.9) and comedy (570am) something is very wrong

I wish there was a way for me to listen to the music that I like through my car and then choose how I want to listen, like take a trip through Sgt. Peppers, or a trip down memory lane of all things grunge, or just random songs.

Does anyone know such a way?

Makes perfect sense. I sometimes ponder listening to nothing in my car instead of that worthless shit. The Triangle is a modern rock desert. Thank God for smart phone apps and internet streaming because if this was the 80s or 90s you would be stuck listening to some horrible shit.

Why cant we get something together that can be sent to these program directors and show them how many people are unsatisfied with the radio? I've tried all the outlets I know (email and social media), I'm lost on how to make them aware that we need better radio.

Or I'll just keep Listening to my Pandora. Even that shit gets old after a while.

So how does the radio industry work? I keep hearing people say the repeat music is because of how the radio industry works. For example, why can't a classic rock radio station play every Pink Floyd, or Rolling Stones song that they have in their library before they repeat the same one. And why can't they have every radio track ever put out by classic bands like that?
