when you want the shit to bend out instead of in
I have never used it.
Quote : | "Pinning This method is by far the least known and utilized stapling method. It is used to temporarily bind documents or other items, often cloth or clothing, for sewing. In order to pin, the anvil must be shifted so that the staple bends outwards instead of inwards. The staple binds the item with relative security, but can be easily removed by pulling the staple along the plane of the paper. This method varies between staplers, as some anvils need to be simply pushed forward to allow pinning, while others must be rotated. Some staplers implement pinning by bending one leg of the staple inwards, while bending the other outwards. Some modern staplers do not even include support for pinning." | ] 6/4/2012 3:48:07 PM

you know, the metal part in the base of the stapler that directs the bend direction of the staple points
not sure why you would want them to bend outward instead 6/4/2012 3:49:33 PM

you know the pinning thing makes sense... sort of anti-climactic, was more interesting when I didn't know. I guess people never use it because a staple is pretty temporary anyway considering the availability of staple removers (not that its hard to get them out anyway)... And the paperclip is a more reasonable (and reusable) temporary binder for paper. As for fabric, well never heard of a staple being used for that, that is what pins are for. Hmm
