Ok, so not really that expensive, but in getting new TV service I've found that getting DVR, even on one box, from the cable company seems to be in the $16-$18/month range. (I think it was costing me $7/month from DirecTV previously). TiVo isn't any better, $15/month plus you have to pay $100-$400 for the box. Is there any other, cheaper way to do it? Enlighten me as I'm rather dumb about the finer points of these things.

The alternative for most folks is a Windows Media Center PC.

I built mine for ~$600.

Here's basically what I built, with some newer components for about the same price:

You can easily drop the SSD if you desire, which would cover a Windows license if you need one.

Any trouble setting up that cablecard with your cable provider?

Nope. I've set up cablecards with two different devices (ATI tuner and now the HDHomerun Prime) multiple times. It's been easy and straightforward everytime.

Go to Comcast, request one (they give you one for free), get home, call Comcast, tell them you want to activate a CC, give them the ID numbers, plug it in, wait a couple of minutes, and done.

Has anyone set a cable card up on twc. I am interested in the TIVO but even more so in card used in a computer. Are you able to output recordings made on the computer to any device via the internets. Any information will be much appreciated. Is it complicated, like too hard for a woman to use, let me know that too.
