So i get about 3 hours per week to play xbox... usually at the butt crack of dawn sat & sun.

This morning, i couldn't play shit randomly.

My ping was >100 on every game i tried to play (best case scenario) to be honest, i've had some days that just feel laggy... but this was quake circa 1995 style. Skip Skip skip dead.

Now i have not had this problem in the past 5 months since i started to dabble in gaming again.

I reset the router, modem, & xbox. I tried 3 different games to see if it was the gaming server or what.

So, i went to speed test.com and it said i had a ping of 23 but then when it did the bandwidth test, i can usually watch it throttle up etc and it just locked up and then all of a sudden said i had 8.3mbps download and almost 1 upload.

basically... should i shoot the router and get a new one or should i shoot the TWC modem..

based on the info you provided, I cant tell which it is. You need to do like TWC is gonna tell you and remove the router out of the picture. Plug your computer directly into the modem (reset it), and then run your tests.

Also, dont run speedtest. Go to ndt.ncren.net and run their test. Youll have to look in the additional info but it will tell you if you are suffering packet drops and whatnot.

Also whats your router? Does it have latest firmware? Was this on wireless or wired? If it was wireless, wireless always sucks, i dont care what you say about it. Always do wired.

My RR has been shit all weekend too so it's probably not your router.

I also had serious problems recently with my own service; once when I called (actually to ask about consumer IPv6 deployment...turns out it'll be by the end of the year) I actually got the recorded message that there is an outage in my area

then again that's the Cincinnati area but still

Good to know RR has been shitting the bed... its an old beklin N router that's about 5 years old now and the latest firmware is 4 years old too.

i guess its time to get something new. probably that supports dd wrt.

I know the xbox slim doesn't support 5ghz so should i concentrate on powerful antennas or will other things working on 5ghz clear up the 2.4ghz band ?

Basically i'm probably getting a buffalo but for the xbox's sake should i go stronger signal or more frequencies?

for the record, larger antenna don't automatically make reception better. the wavelength of 2.4ghz isn't getting any larger or smaller and in some cases a larger antenna grabs more noise due to harmonics. if the connection is so shitty, get a wired one.

Problem is i live in an apartment which isn't wired for cat 5/5e/6 and if i make my xbox wired then i have to run a splitter on my cable which i hear is an equally shitty arrangement.

if you live in an apartment, your cable is split 834256734897453 times already

ohh i know but whats a decent splitter that won't make everything shit the bed ?

and i thought splitters were like /2/2/2/2/2/2/2

so maybe .000005 is acceptable but .0000025 isn't?

Just use what you got. I havent had troubles unless the signal was split more than 3 times before it got to the modem.

mine's been shitty tonight

50-1000 pings, until I reset the modem

it reset itself at random a couple times too. I suppose I can't complain too much, TWC has actually been relatively decent for the past few years.
