"The Obama administration said Friday it will stop deporting young illegal immigrants who were brought to the United States as children if they meet certain requirements.
The election-year policy change will cover people younger than 30 who came to the United States before the age of 16, pose no criminal or security threat, and were successful students or served in the military, the Department of Homeland Security said.
It also will allow those meeting the requirements to apply for work permits, the statement said."

I saw this earlier. I wonder why the line in the sand was drawn @ <30 years of age, and that moved here when they were <16?

Wondered the same thing. Seems like those would be the guidlines but it would be a case-by-case basis. On the other hand it would probably cost $texas to have people going over each case.

I half way okay with this since it's a work visa and not permanent. Then again, I hate the ass kissing of the Latino community. They act like they are entitled to goddamn everything and politicians are more than happy to ingratiate themselves for votes.

^^ My best guess would be that it's a weakened version of the DREAM act...

Basically targetting those people around the age who are in college, or most likely to be going to college. This is all guesswork though.

I think this should automatically grant you citizenship, fuck a green card. If you voluntarily give a country 4 years of your life you should get citizenship out of it when you leave.

that seems well and good but I feel like you should have to be a citizen to serve in the military in the first place

but i get that we have to take what we can get since we are on a volunteer basis

Maybe coincidental, but the Immigration Control and Reform Act of 1986 granted amnesty to people who moved up here before January 1, 1982 -- which would be 30 years ago. So if you're older than 30, you are old enough to have been covered by that (assuming you were in the US by that date)

And the "before 16" part makes sense. Anyone older would be immigrating of their own volition -- certainly they would have the opportunity to stay and work on their own in Mexico. If you're younger than sixteen, you pretty much have to go where your family drags you. So someone who crosses illegally when they're 5, 10, even 15 years old didn't make the decision to violate immigration law -- their guardian did.

It's also not like he just sprung this on us today. He's been revising the directives away from deportation some time (for example, guiding them towards focusing on illegals who have committed serious crimes in this country, as opposed to just "any illegal you happen to find")

Don't all illegal immigrants, by definition, pose a criminal threat?

The following summer of 2007, President Sarkozy amended the law to also require the acquisition of the French language as a pre-condition."

I mean thats all well and good but France doesnt exactly have millions of people trying to sneak into its borders

also, the republicans were jumping all over the "most deportingest president in history" bandwagon. now they get to climb aboard the "obama is soft on immigration" bandwagon lol

No: Illegal presence in this country is per se a civil violation, not a criminal offense; besides, the term "threat" implies the likelihood of criminal acts in the future, not the manner of offenses in the past.
