Love the looks I get when I go through self-checkouts and know all my produce codes or when I'm at work now and people are amazed how I can just spit out all the PLUs to my cashiers.

You never lose those once you learn them.

^Thats ultimately the thing, a decent cashier is gonna fast enough that they're waiting on the machine to catch up most of the time.

I actually don't like self checkout at all because a cashier can get people through much faster in general. But because they've cut back on the number of cashiers in favor of self checkout I can usually get my 2~3 items faster.

That said I despise slow cashiers. I've done it, its not that hard.

I've been a cashier, but that doesn't make self checkout any better. They're pretty slow and irritating as hell. They're only worth while when you only have one or two bags of groceries, any more than that .
