What do you people think about this snack food? I'm kinda up in the air. Sometimes I want one, but when I taste it I am all like .

They all use bacteria and sugar to produce lactic acid, which lowers the pH of the sausage to around 5.0, firming up the meat and hopefully killing all harmful bacteria.

Dextrose
Serves as food for the lactic acid starter culture. Slim Jim: It's alive!

Salt
Salt binds the water molecules in meat, leaving little H2O available for microbial activity—and thereby preventing spoilage. One Slim Jim gives you more than one-sixth of the sodium your body needs in a day.

Sodium nitrite
Cosmetically, this is added to sausage because it combines with myoglobin in animal muscle to keep it from turning gray. Antibiotically, it inhibits botulism. Toxicologically, 6 grams of the stuff—roughly the equivalent of 1,400 Slim Jims—can kill you. So go easy there, champ.

Hydrolyzed soy
Hydrolysis, in this instance, breaks larger soy protein molecules into their constituent amino acids, such as glutamic acid. Typically, the process also results in glutamic acid salt—also known as monosodium glutamate, a familiar flavor enhancer."

So basically, they dont know what grade of meat is used to make a slim jim, they just conjured up an image of low quality meat while discussing slim jims. plus that is probably proprietary information

So what? corn and wheat are bad to the general population? If anything wouldnt that be sustainability?

I like how they sensationalize sodium nitrite. All cured meats/meat products have to have sodium nitrite.

Lots of vegetables have way more sodium nitrite in them anyways.

I LOVE Slim Jims.

However, in the interest of slightly better health, I've been eating these things called Turkey Tom-Toms.

They're similar, but aren't quite as bad for you and the taste/texture are more consistent. Also, they don't leave a film on the roof of your mouth.

The Garner plant did blow-up in June '09, killing four and injuring about 67.
The "National Fuel Gas Code" was amended soon after.

but the Garner plant closed almost two years later on May 20, 2011.
The same day Randy Mario Poffo (Macho Man) died from a heart-attack/car-crash.
