I have similar pictures from Amelia's cleft palate repair. An invasive C. parapsilosis infection caused wound breakdown and she ended up spitting out part of the hard palate.

Read the whole thing. Amazing that after they took the retainers out, there was... nothing! The problem had simply vanished.

However, I don't understand how there were no open wounds leftover from all the internal 'skin' that had come out.

I had to have part of the roof of my mouth removed and grafted onto my lower gum to repair that area. They prefer to leave the would open, but protect it with a retainer while it heals. Unfortunately mine didn't take and I had to go back to get the roof stitched shut. Getting that shot in the roof of the mouth was the most uncomfortable experience I've ever had.

The hole that did not heal is called a fistula and the retainer is technically called an obturator.

We go back in 6 weeks to meet with speech to see if an obturator will be useful for Amelia.

I have no earthly idea what happened with this guy. I'm a little suspicious that everything was peachy keen once they removed his retainer.
