Dude should have read the packaging instead of trusting the kid in the store.

only place i ever see it listed that way is when looking at MLS listings. usually shows it both as acreage and if fractional, then in sq feet as well.

to get acres, you have to figure out the square footage first (duh).

^^

sure, but i think the other dude's point is that it's an odd measure to use when speaking colloquially. It would be just as odd if someone used hectares.

people have a frame of reference for an acre when talking about land. when you talk about a plot of land in some other measure, it trips people up.

I, for one, do not find hectares just as odd as square footage when describing someone's lawn. But thenagain, this is Murrica. I sure as well won't conform to the oppressive metric system used by the rest of the world.

1 acre = 43560 sq ft. Guess it wouldn't have been accurate to estimate it to an acre.

It's much less dramatic when you say he killed one acre of grass. Then no one cares. But holy shit 40k square feet must be so much!!!1!!1!

Regular people make mistakes all the time and nobody cares, but when some dumbass with a nice home fucks up his lawn it is newsworthy to CNN.com.

Lawn care specialists everywhere are laughing.

the packaging did look a little misleading compared to the weed killer of the same brand

This is the unit of measurement landscapers and lawn care professional use. All requirements for amount of seed, fertilizer, and chemicals to use in a certain area are based off square feet. You only see acres and hectares when in agricultural settings.

Frankly, this is not the homeowner's or the manufacture's fault, if he went to a retailer and got advice from employees, then it is on them (even though there's nothing he can do about it). Again, this is another good reason that people with little to no experience with lawn care or chemical applications have no business trying to do it themselves. It will be at least 2 weeks if not a month (depending on the rate he used and active ingredient of the herbicide) before he can even think about aerating reseeding, much less laying sod. Laying 40,000sqft of sod in the middle of summer? Expensive and risky even on the best ground.

50/50 blame here on him and the employees. Company that sold the product did a good enough job of informing the consumer.

What an idiot. For someone with what looked like a really nice yard, you've gotta perform a little more due diligence to read the peel off labels. And it was pretty clear if you looked at both bottles that one kills just weeds and the other probably does a lot more (I think it said something like "double play").

Sucks....looked like he had a pretty sweet law before this. I think I'd cry for a couple days.

yeah, i mean, whenever I'm looking at herbicides, for that very reason, I'm always extremely careful to read the label if i'm buying something new. If i'm still not sure about what I'm buying, there's enough competing products out there that I just select something else. I can't feel too sorry for the guy.
