you're taking an entry level position in their company, and more than likely getting entry level pay. It is a hiring companies market right now. gotta love all those jobs that were made out there for us!

anyway, good luck with the hunt!

I once went to an interview for an "entry level position". A few minutes into the interview and I figured out this position was over my head... and required a PE (not stated nor described well on the online description)... turns out they wanted someone with 4-5 years of experience/new PE. That is NOT entry level in engineering.

We typically hire entry level into the Associate level of engineering, needing bachelors or the equivalent in experience. It helps if you interned though.

^ that aounds like a ploy to hire someone on at a lower level so they could pay less, and still get someone with a PE. Even if successful, the company likely wouldn't be able to retain that employee for long

why?

a job/career is about getting paid for something you can do, that some company or entity needs. this bullshit about following your passions is some fairy tale crap that retarded baby boomer parents invented. The world doesn't give a shit about what people are passionate about. The best case scenario for 99% of people is to find a career that pays well that you don't hate.

The alternative is to follow your passion, whatever that might be and accept a barely-liveable wage for it because tens of thousands of other kids decided the same thing was their passion, and supply/demand dictates that wages are low because there's an overabundance of [x]. but then don't whine about how bad you have it like Snewf.

^^, ^^^,

would you still do the same job you do, right now, if it only paid $20k a year? I definitely wouldn't. I'd do what I needed to do to switch to a better paying career.

For now, those of us that are technophiles are the lucky ones.

Right, but you'd pursue something you're interested in. I wouldn't shovel shit 12 hours a day for $90k, either.

That said, there's a certain mendoza line where, assuming a certain level of income, even significant incremental increase in income for other jobs would not be attractive to me.

^^

most definitely, it'd be a matter of "what do I like the most or hate the least", and pays the most?

like qntmfred, my dream job would be in teaching, and for me specifically a high school teacher. But I like not worrying about feeding my kid more.

i just want to get out of construction. i hate dealing with the people in this industry and there are no signs of a younger generation coming in. everyone i deal with is 40+.

^Does that mean lots of job opportunities will be opening up?

I'd love to be more on the construction side of things, but very long working hours, shitty weather, lots of travel, and often lower pay keep me on the design side.

I think a lot of my friends who did construction in college/started working in the industry are trying to find jobs with more office time, better hours, and often better pay.

Here's my whining for a sec....

I work a job I don't like to pay the bills, but volunteer my ass off outside of work to learn the skills necessary to do the job that I lurve. Sadly I didn't figure out what I like until AFTER college, so I wasn't smart enough to go thru a degree program that would put me in the right position.

So one of these days I'll get to do a job I lurve and actually get paid bank for it. Until then, I work a job I can't stand and barely get any sleep because of all the other projects I work on.

you would think there would be an exodus of older project managers, superintendents, and estimators from the GC firms but in the five years i've been here it's the same group of aging men. and there is such a disconnect between that group, stuck in their ways, and me. I work for an EC as an estimator/PM and honestly hate the PM side of it due to that. Estimating isn't so bad, but i'm chained to a desk 85% of the time.

I definitely prefer this as opposed to working in the trade out on the jobsite though. I think the hardest part about this industry is the GC firms are no longer "building GCs", meaning they actually had a workforce and built some of the trades themselves. They are all 'construction managers' and paper pushers simply putting numbers into a spreadsheet and funneling the responsibility down to everyone else. It's just not very rewarding.

If it's anything like my industry, these older cats WERE going to retire....but then the recession hit, hurt some people's 401Ks, and pushed off retirement plans for several years.

NOT A SCRIPT

has anyone heard me whining about my employment lately?
I think I've made peace with my situation and I am still doggedly pursuing employment
I've got the skills and the education to warrant making some serious money some day
I just might have to fuck around part-time and freelance until I get the 5-7 years experience that is required for entry level positions in my field

and on the day that I cash my first pay check I invite you to suck my dick

meh, it is what it is

I chose a notoriously difficult industry to break into
and then I happened to live at a time when the hubris of our financial industry fucked the rest of the country out of jobs and prosperity so that has made things somewhat more difficult

the point is I'm happy

I agree with BobbyDigital I used to be passionate about playing poker, that is until I started playing poker 40 hours a week. I'd probably get sick of doing anything if I had to do it 40 hours week after week. For now I'm quite content to find a career that pays well, that I don't hate, which will allow me to continue to pursue my current passions during the abundance of time when I am not working.
