The article I read said that they did not think it was tied to muslim extremists which makes me thing the gunman might be muslim. That could be other people's thinking too.

Yeah, I can see how the restriction on CC stopped this gunman.
Restrictive guns laws never stop those that want to kill or commit crime and only put the innocent at a disadvantage.
Just off the top of my head, the Aurora/Denver area is pretty liberal and as a result I'd bet that there aren't that many CC permits issued.
Firing in crowds isn't ideal but if it means I stop/kill the shooter from killing anyone else then the risk is worth it. When have you ever heard of a situation where someone has shot an innocent while trying to stop an active shooter? I'd argue that it is rare and that is because CC is rare and they are not usually around when an event like this happens. Instead the active shooter is able to kill/hurt a great number of people before he stops.

Gang activity was mentioned though. I think it was a lone gunman and would be willing to bet he either worked at that theater or spent a lot of time there.

^^^ The Denver Post article that had the comment I was referring to only stated that the gunman was masked and wearing black, nothing about his ethnicity or religion. And the comment somebody left was:

I am a big proponent of CC and most of my family does this, but I am not sure how effective any of them would have been against somebody like this. Unfortunately a movie theater is a bad situation to be shooting in anyways. As soon as a shooter opens fire its going to be loud, dark, and especially on a midnight showing like this, packed to the rafters with people. Your night vision is going to be shot to shit due to the muzzle flashes. Bystanders are going to be running around in confusion, you can't accurately determine your target. Additionally dude tossed in a smoke grenade and may have been wearing body armor. Now low level shit could be penetrated, but if it was a decent quality and you just have a little snub gun, you aren't going to be able to do shit to somebody like that. I carry .38 +P and if the guy had body armor, it would have done nothing more than piss him off. In this case you have a recipe for accidentally shooting somebody else while trying to save the day. If I had been in there and this happened, I would have done my best to drop down, get out and only worried about shooting if the guy had walked right up to me. Aside from that, I am getting the fuck outta there.

This situation is TOTALLY different than the internet gaming site in Florida that got held up earlier in the week.

Anecdotally, it always seems to be white guys who do these pointless, public, mass murderings.

Also, both sides of the gun war will try to use this as some sort of twisted evidence but reality is its a dark panicy theater. Chances are a person with a gun legally on them is only going to add more confusion and a crossfire scenario. If someone is going to be psycho enough to go to the lengths this nut did, there is really little that we can do unless he happens to be standing in front of a CC holder.

And the shooter knows that the chances of that are extremely low and decides to proceed with his plan.
These attacks happen where the shooter knows there is a low probability of meeting resistance. Although, in this case, there were already police at the theater for crowd control.

Radio feed of Aurora Fire & PD. Some of the earlier traffic was broadcast and was chilling. Cops couldn't get in the theater because of tear gas. All hell was literally breaking loose.
