Are owned by a small segment of the population and are used in a very small percentage of crimes. No recent mass shootings in the U.S. (that I can recall) have used an actual assault rifle.

FYI - an AR-15 is not an assault rifle. It was only considered such when the government moved the goalposts in the 1990s to instill fear in the population in order to ban "scary looking" firearms.

^He had an AR-15, not capable of fully automatic or burst fire. Not an assault weapon.

Quote :
"In the former U.S. law, the legal term assault weapon included certain specific semi-automatic firearm models by name (e.g., Colt AR-15, TEC-9, non select-fire AK-47s produced by three manufacturers, and Uzis) and other semi-automatic firearms because they possess a minimum set of cosmetic features from the following list of features:"

"The earlier term assault rifle refers to rifles that are capable of fully automatic fire."

5.56 NATO is a people hunting bullet.

Imagine if that AR-15 wasn't there. He would have only shot 10 people tops.

So only guns are used to murder people now?

My guns have never killed anyone; only paper and plastic.

Ban guns for private citizens! Only the government can be trusted with guns!

The AR in AR-15 does not stand for Assault Rifle. It comes from Armalite, the name of the company that first built the rifle. It is a semi-automatic, which means you get one bullet for each trigger pull.

Assault Rifle is a nice trigger/buzz word used by people that know nothing about guns to horrify other that know nothing about guns.

People kill people. Some people use different tools to accomplish that goal. We never hear you complaining about knives, poisons, rocks, etc.

Knives are designed to kill. BAN KNIVES! The earliest form of knives were arrowheads/spears (the general category being bladed instruments) used in battle and hunting.

honestly, if he didn't have legal access to guns he would have bought them on the black market or just made a bomb. banning guns would not have stopped this fool from killing people.

Yep. Surprised he just didn't go the bomb route. The biggest mass murderers use homemade bombs, which are easily made, transported, and relatively cheap.

Well, I'm not good a firearm ID, but it appears each is an AR. In any case, I have no reason to not trust any of them.

If I had to pick one not to trust, it would be the first, since his finger is on the trigger and it doesn't appear that he is in a proper place to be firing a gun.

The second may be my next choice. Is he about to shoot an innocent dog? Is he busting down the door to the wrong house and going in blazing?

A bomb would have been more effective in that theater. With that said a assault weapon ban is still a good idea. You can't argue against the ban because it will make killers go a different route.

how does that make sense?

1)
Quote :

2) Most firearms used in crimes are shuffled through the black market. Your average killer isn't purchasing firearms legally.

I've been treated like a criminal just to exercise my constitutional right. Difficult enough.

Ok. Instead of a ban I suggest we make people go through extensive psycho analysis. Make people pay for it themselves and then have a waiting period.

Jumping through hoops is a good deterrent.

See this. This is what the 2nd amendment does. Right to bear arms to form a militia. There is no militia that can challenge the US Army so why keep this amendment on the books.

The militia clause referred to a free state, meaning the individual states, thus a federal armed force is not a state militia.

Quote :
"In no particular order, early American settlers viewed the right to arms and/or the right to bear arms and/or state militias as important for one or more of these purposes:
deterring tyrannical government;
repelling invasion;
suppressing insurrection;
facilitating a natural right of self-defense;
participating in law enforcement;
enabling the people to organize a militia system."

The only place where people today argue about the meaning of "the people" is the second amendment. No where else in the founding documents is the meaning of "the people" argued to mean the federal government

"The Virginia Tech massacre was a school shooting that took place on April 16, 2007, on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia, United States. Seung-Hui Cho shot and killed 32 people and wounded 17 others[1] in two separate attacks, approximately two hours apart, before committing suicide. A man wielding a 9mm handgun + a .22 handgun is responsible for the deadliest shooting incident by a single gunman in US history. I hope you'll rethink your opinion.

You cannot have the same guns as the US Military so your right to bear arms has already been infringed. I'm fine with people having pistols/shotguns for personal protection. There is no reason any person should have a AR15 with 100 round drum. WTF are you gonna hunt with that?

Uh, almost every firearm on the market was or is a military-style, or based firearm.

And you CAN have the same firearms as the U.S. military. Some are just more difficult to obtain, but still legal to do so.

100 round drums are great for target practice.

you have to pass an extensive background check (like, much more extensive than for a concealed carry permit), you have to have your local county sherriff sign off on it, and you also forfeit your right to illegal search and seizure

class 3 permits arent easy to come by

Defending yourself against a LEO is a major crime under most governments, unfortunately. Thus it rarely happens. I don't know of any cases and unfortunately, too many people have been conditioned by the government to believe that only cops can be trusted, that they're here for your safety and protection, and that they're always correct.

But that's a different argument from the one in this thread...

Any my point on that post wasn't about defense from police. It was about self-defense in general. Police aren't a self-defense force. They aren't here for your personal protection. Only the individual is responsible for self-defense.
