I would really like to see parentcanpay expand on some of the many subtleties of this movie that he was talking about on the previous page, because I really had a hard time with finding anything good about this movie on any level aside from pure action/stunts.

Maybe I just wasn't in the right mindset for this movie, but it took me over 4 hours to watch because I kept pausing it and surfing random internet articles because the movie was so tedious. I'm so glad I didn't watch it in the theaters, I would have fallen asleep. I can't imagine watching it 2 times, much less 6-7.

I totally agree with the people saying that Max didn't have a big enough role. Until the last 30 minute segment, he wasn't even one of the 5 main characters. The freakin' warboy that was crushing on the redhead had more character development. I felt like they relied too much on previous movies for his reputation and forgot to actually make him important in this one. Hell, he spend the first 30 minutes of the movie not even speaking or doing anything but being a literal bag of blood. I wanted him to have cool traps/tricks on his car that would help him reclaim it/get revenge, but Charlize Theron got to have all the fun there. Max just went out like a bitch in the first 2 minutes and didn't even get his car back at the end when he had a chance. Very disappointing. I tried to keep my expectations low for this movie, but even still, I was pretty let down.

I really liked this movie. It felt like everything Waterworld should have been, but on land.

While it's not a "great" movie, I really enjoyed it. I'm not usually a fan of most "action" movies, but as far as action goes, this was pretty incredible. The guitar player was silly and badass at the same time.

Sometimes I "don't" understand quotation "marks" either.

Sometime I put quotations on labels that some people may or may not use to describe something. Some people think this movie is "great". Some may also argue that this or other movies that I consider to be "action" movies should be labeled as some other genre. (and actually people have used both "great" and "action" in this thread, so it's actually correct, jerk)

Sometimes I'm an arrogant asshole to people on the internet for no reason, but i'm mostly just an asshole when someone's being a unprovoked dick for no apparent reason.

V People who don't like describing movies as "action movies", and instead want to use labels like "post-apocalyptic", or "dystopian", or something like that. whatever, stupid thing to be sensitive about. i liked the movie.

Wait who is arguing that this isn't an action movie?

I personally thought it was more a romantic comedy.

It was a romance, and it had some funny parts.

Rightfully so. Saw it in theatres and it was amazing...the action and suspense. Dialogue was at a minimum anyways.

I was intrigued the whole movie.

So, in terms of comparing this film to the Raid 2 and John Wick, I still go with john wick as the better film. I like Mad Max a lot, but one flaw that it has as an action film is that it relies to heavily on makeup and sound design to portray its villain. Sure, there is that 10 second scene where it shows him checking his love nest to see if his healthy blood line is in stock, but that does not necessarily explain why he is such a tyrannt.

The villain in John Wick was one of the most compelling characters that I have seen in cinema over that past five years or so. The raid 2 also had very well-crafted villain as a well as a secondary villain, but the hero had so many moments where he survived a situation with impossible odds, that I eventually stopped caring about him.

Furiosa was a complete ripoff of the Joker guys. I can't believe it was nominated.

There is a didference between quality and enjoyment. I have no problem with you saying you enjoyed John Wick more, or even found it more entertaining, but it is absolutely not a better film.

hard to say, at one level they are basically in two different genres and it is hard to make direct comparisons in terms of which is the better film. One is a sci-fi action adventure, and the other is a hitman movie. Both are awesome films, just splitting hairs here in terms of what actually makes for a great action film.

I certainly liked both of them better than the Raid 2. I think that if you are going to do some karate, kung-fu knock out shit, then it has to be more realistic and more along the lines of the vintage Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee movies. I ended up stop caring about the hero in Raid 2 about halfway through the film, and continued watching for the villains.

And before you crazy about me contradicting myself, what i meant in the OP was that JW as a slightly better action film in terms of analyzing them both based on what makes for a good action film.

If two films are in a different genre, is it worth directly comparing analytically?

I can see comparing John Wick to the Raid. But does anyone get anything out of comparing Bird Man with the Fellowship of the ring?

I watched Oppenheimer the other day. It was so refreshing to watch a really good movie that didn’t have it’s origin in comics.

Furious was good. It was knocked down a few pegs because of its reliance on CGI but, it was still a very entertaining movie.

I had to go back and watch Fury Road and….there’s nothing else to say that hasn’t been said already but what a gloriously beautiful, violent movie.
