My therapist recommended I try it to get over some anxiety issues I was having a few years ago. He said I have a certain wit that might translate well on stage. Unfortunately, at the time, I was also suffering from a strange bout of spontaneous tumescense which would often occur at very inopportune times. Like on stage in front of strangers. 8/1/2012 2:20:23 PM

^^ i feel like you can create a situation through story then be funny about it either scripted or not.
perhaps have an audience member create a story, then make funny comments about it
my written jokes are mostly about religion, hot chicks, and people's insecurities. now that i write it like that, it seems pretty standard and generic. they are unique though 8/3/2012 11:29:45 AM

Sounds like a good recipe for your first crash and burn stand-up. Please follow this model and have someone videotape it so I can see the fail. 8/7/2012 10:15:49 AM

That's a good recipe for a professional comedian. Even then, very few comedians do a majority of their act that way...Rich Vos is one of the few guys I've seen that can pull off a full act like that.
I just think if you're doing stand-up for the first time, you need to have a little more structure....as in have your whole act written out. There's always going to be opportunities for improvisation...but trying to start off like that is just asking for failure. 8/7/2012 10:32:40 AM

Even people who do improv comedy usually have to take a few classes and do a lot of training before their first improv show. Even then, they usually suck until they get a ton of experience.
I think it's funny when "class clowns" and "funny guys" think they would be great at stand-up and improv. Being the guy with the funny one-liners when everyone is high and/or shitfaced does not translate into being a good comedian.
Steve might be "fucking hilarious!" at the keg party...but he's going to look like a douchebag stuttering on stage at the local comedy club. 8/7/2012 10:41:05 AM

I'm not saying you shouldn't do standup period, I was just agreeing with jbrick83's specific comment that trying to "improv" an entire stand-up set without a lot of experience doesn't seem like a great idea. If you had a set worked out and you want to do it, go for it. 8/7/2012 10:44:58 AM
|
jbrick83 All American 23447 Posts user info edit post |
I'm just telling you to think more about it. Not..."whether or not you should do it" thinking...fucking do it....but how you are going to do it and how much work you are going to put into it.
First of all...don't go the improv route in your stand-up. Sorry, but it's just not going to work.
Second...try and write out your whole act. It will probably change drastically from what you think is your final draft when you finally go on stage...but I would start off with a word-for-word guide to your act. Then start trying it out on family and friends. They'll tell you what's not funny and what is hilarious. Maybe you can take the hilarious parts and expound on them. Ask them to heckle or add comments during the show, and that's when you put in a little improv.
Just practice, practice, practice. 8/7/2012 10:45:17 AM

I don't live in the area, but I've been to improv classes (haven't taken them) down here in Charleston and use to go to a lot of shows and have friends in that do improv.
You need to decide whether or not you want to do improv or stand-up comedy...because they are two completely different animals. Personally...if I could write out some good jokes and have good delivery, I would stay away from improv. That shit is difficult and takes longer to master. 8/7/2012 10:56:50 AM

First of all, fucking lol at jbrick giving other people advice on how to be funny. He’s about as hilarious as getting buttraped with a bayonet dipped in ricin. Secondly, classes are for saps. Being funny in a group setting when everyone’s attention is on you is a talent, not a skill. You can improve your ability in this regard, but as far as having the ability in the first place, you either have it or you don’t. A class to be funny is like a class to be mean…it only works if the seed is already planted. Thirdly, I’ve done a few open mics for shits and done alright; haven’t ‘killed it’ by any means, but I went up there drunk with absolutely no material and just winged it. I’m confident I could come up with a 10-15 minute bit that would work across demographics, but seeing as how my humor leans to the more macabre and sadistic, its not an avenue I really have a desire to pursue. If you’re serious about this, get up there and get some reps, because you’ll never know if you have ‘it’ until you do. Best of luck. 8/7/2012 11:08:08 AM

Being funny on the internet /= in real life. Sorry Slave. Can't believe you didn't "kill it."
Also never said I was funny. I just know when other people are.
I also don't know about "stand-up" classes. I'm sure you can get some coaching on your delivery and how to deal with the crowd...but you're either funny or you're not. Improv classes, however, are a must. I've seen hilarious people get up there and completely bomb improv over and over again. Improv is tough.

That makes it worse. You were born and bred in pig shit, and you'll never be able to wash off the stink and the insecurities it saddled you with.
For me, Greenville was a much needed one year respite from the bounds and constraints of civilized society. Glad I got that out my system.
