You can't really stop it from happening. As frightening as it is think about almost any able bodied and minded human has the capability to kill many others. Guns are one way to do this, and a relatively easy way, but nowhere near as effective as some others.

Arming more people is a valid, but probably the least effective way to reduce these types of tragedies.

It's a systemic problem.

We have a 15 year old first aid kit at work that's only ever had a few bandages removed from it. Someone can learn to use a gun, and carry it with them, but the vast majority of people will never have the chance to "use" their preparation, if theyre lucky. When the time comes, what are the chances their gun will work? They'll have the state of mind to use it? They won't accidentally shoot someone else? etc etc. The variables are too numerous to delude yourself into thinking this is THE solution.

Preparation is important, but is so unlikely to be needed, it's not reliable.

Horribly incorrect. The left already proposed a magazine capacity bill and a online ammo sales restriction in the wake of the Colorado shootings. The real debate was brought up by those who you typically expect to really politicize tragedy.
