please please learn to grab like slices from the front and back of the loaf, so thatat the end I am rewarded with one huge, symmetrical sandwich, not an open face sandwich with a bread garnish

What kind of bread do you even buy that a)allows you to get to the back half of the loaf and b) doesn't have the uniform sized slices all the way through?

I leave the front heel there until I get to the back of the loaf. I pretend like it helps seal in the moisture instead of having an exposed edge as it would if I used it on my first sammich. Last sammich is a two-heeled special.
