but everything it lists in range (restaurants, entertainment, parks, etc) is less than a mile away

must be a website for fatasses who can't walk less than a mile

btw, how are they calculating those distances? for instance, it lists at Dunkin' Donuts as being 2.46 miles away. however, according to mapquest it's 3.72 miles away in driving distance. if i were to walk there, i'd basically be walking on the sidewalk beside the road...so walking distance should be pretty close to the driving distance, right? surely it wouldn't amount to over a mile of difference...

What it may not take into account is whether or not it's practical/safe to walk to the places in range. In the case of my future address in Richmond, if you walk alone on Broad Street at night, you're just asking to get mugged. So that crosses off about a third of the walkable locations during the hours of dusk to dawn.

Nonetheless it will be nice to be within walking distance of so many things (at least during the day). And points southward are actually practical after dark, so that helps.

House we are about to buy is a 6, but it's less than 2 miles from southpoint. Easy bicycling distance.

Where I live now is a 46, but I'm scared to bicycle down Maynard to the grocery store so the walkability is about equal.

0. I would definitely like to be somewhere that had a great score so that I could walk and bike everywhere but I can't complain too much because we saved a ton when we bought our house by giving up on the downtown and we're still <10 non-highway miles to free parking in a great downtown.

Whenever we move (hopefully not for a long time though) we'll probably push for something with more walk-ability

The score is screwy is all.

Our house score is 0 but we are a ~1 mile drive from a local coffee shop, dunkin donuts, 2 grocery stores, several small restaurants, some local clothing and furniture stores etc. And then we are 8 miles from free parking in downtown Greenville, SC which has tons of stuff. But this is all based on walk-ability. The stuff near us utilizes roads without sidewalks so I think they don't count that. And then they don't care that we are only 15 mins from a great downtown because we would still use a car. We are close by car to lots of stuff, it's just not that walkable and that's all they care about.

yup. Exactly why we decided against living in The Fan even though there are some gorgeous historic homes that are well within reach. While checking one out a few weekends ago, a 10 person brawl broke out two blocks away.

Yesterday there was this http://www2.timesdispatch.com/news/2012/aug/23/tdmain01-roving-group-commits-assault-violent-robb-ar-2149950/

So, yeah, i think we'll reside in Midlothian.

Got a 28 for where I live now, but I could easily walk to the shops at bedford and falls river. between those two places I feel like I don't need anything else. 2 sushi places, book store, cafes, dry cleaner, nail salon, a billion parks, right next to the greenway, grocery store, general store...
