I'm selling a car to a friend but his company is paying me for it. They want to cut a check for the total cost (to both me and him) of transferring the title into his name.
The car is a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier, 2 door.
Is there a fee associated with a title transfer? I know everything comes with bonus $5 notary fees - how many of those will they hit me with? I assume he will have to pay some kind of taxes on the vehicle? Anything else? 8/25/2012 2:09:34 PM |

You have to pay some BS tax that depends on the value of the car at time of registration. I have never seen any way to look that value up online.
The only way to get a fair quote it to go to the license plate office and act like you are about to do it, see how much it is, then tell them you will come back. 8/25/2012 6:18:25 PM |

this sounds all-around retarded. why wouldn't they write a check to you for the vehicle and write him a separate check to reimburse him for whatever it costs him to pay the highway use tax and get the title work and registration done?
sounds shady 8/25/2012 10:23:29 PM |

if you take the title to the DMV its pretty much a $40 fee for the title transfer, then i think 3% highway use tax which is basically 3% of what they value the vehicle at
for a 96 Cavalier you're probably looking at like $40 + ~$75
$2 notary fee
and if you want an instant title thats another $75, but if you can wait 1-2 weeks for them to mail you the title the title fee is only like $30-40
bottom line, if you take $200 bucks to the DMV you can cover everything, probably including an instant title

title transfer ($40?) highway use tax registration fee ($33)
and the car has to have a current inspection.
the title requires two notary stamps. one for both parties (top section) which is the transfer, and one at the bottom for the buyer, which is the application for a new title. usually, just the seller can get the top section stamped.
your bank will typically notarize it for free.
DMV will take a check for all of the fees except the notary fee, which typically has to be cash. 8/26/2012 10:37:40 AM |

Not just current inspection, but within the last 60 (?...maybe it's 90?) days. 8/26/2012 12:16:10 PM |

They will give him a ten day pass to drive the car, he has to get it inspected during that time and bring the paperwork back and then get his license plate.
Its the stupidest shit ever. You have to drive around with no license plate at all....which sucks because your odds of getting pulled over go through the roof with no plates. 8/27/2012 10:10:16 PM |
