Sorry for your friend, but the market for second hand engagement rings isn't that big... especially for a diamond that has the worst clarity level. Most reputable jewelers refuse to sell a diamond that's not SI-I or clearer. I'm surprised that Kay Jewelers did.

Nothing says I'm completely dedicating every part of myself to you for the rest of my life like a 5 year old second hand ring bought on TWW. I'm no expert, but I think most women would want a new ring, even if it wasn't as expensive. The first question all her friends will as is "How did he propose?" but the next one is always "Where did he get the ring?" and she doesn't want to have to lie every time (unless you plan on lying and not telling her where you got it, in which case you can expect your engagement to last about as long as the OP's "friend"'s did). Also, no woman wants a ring that was already given to another woman and then given back. That's all kinds of bad juju. Prenup anyone?

That being said - tell your friend he's better off pawning or scrapping it.

he can scrap the silver and get a diamond necklace made for his mom.

^the girls you are citing sound like materialistic bitches that need to buy their own damn story to tell her friends.

Or, you know, some dude could save a good bit of cash on a ring for a girl that's in it for the right reasons

Just because a girl doesn't prefer a previously used engagement ring doesn't make them a shallow bitch. This isn't great Grandma's hand me down wedding ring it's someone's relationship fail. If you think you're girl deserves that AND she's going to be okay with it then you go right ahead and put a ring on it and tell me how it goes in ten years. Buying a ring shouldn't be just about money but it should still prove your ability to put some bread on the table and show you're willing to make a large financial commitment to/for someone else. So why does it have to be so much about getting the most bang for your buck that you would buy a ring off Craigslist to save a dollar or get a bigger/nicer ring?

well the way you phrased it made them sound like ... but why are you hating on someone selling a ring? if a dude gets a nice ring (or melts it down so he can make it into a new ring, duh) and it is nicer than one he can afford at that time, then the to each their own.... if you are in love and he proposes then say yes and turn around and talk shit to your friends about how you got it.... then yes, I think you are shallow

^^I mean I get what you're saying, but the man with the kind of girl whose satisfaction hinges on the price and history of her ring probably isn't looking on craigslist. Not judging, I'm certainly empathetic to that, just consider the audience.

Take care not to project your values onto others. There are MANY women out there that don't accept mid-20th-century gender roles and appreciate a man partner that can bring home something of value for minimal expenditure (or at least not blow a significant amount of money on something with no practical value). There are others that simply just don't care; her man gave her a ring and she couldn't love it more, because it came from him.

Anyway, no need to shit on this thread--you're not exactly shedding new light over here. It's a nice ring available for $1k less than appraisal, why make it about anything else.

i bought an extremely ugly engagement ring off a TWWer...8 years ago? a pretty long time, anyway...it was appraised for $1800 and i bought it for $350

now, i didn't buy it to GIVE it to anyone...i held onto it and when i bought my wife's ring, i traded in this extremely ugly ring for an $800 credit toward HER ring...and that was just the "main" diamond, which was not of very good color OR clarity

i sold the 10k ring for $50 to a pawn shop and i still have the 4 smaller diamonds in a bag (not that i have anything to do with them, but the jeweler wouldn't buy them)

so there's always that to consider
