Did Rick Rubin produce this one via email, too?

There's a really good duet with Taylor Swift. But my favorite is the one song written by Brad Paisley.

The funny thing is that Brad Paisley can run circles around any Avett on any stringed instrument.

I listened to this earlier today. It sounds like they are on autopilot.

It's elevator music.

Yeh, this is really bad. I actually liked their previous album (I know I'm in the minority there) and Emotionalism is great. This new one is a chore to get through even once

their venues are only getting bigger, so don't expect to ever see the intimate NYE shows of 4-5 years ago and earlier. playing the Bi-Lo Center last NYE is evidence of that. hell, the NYE show in Charlotte at Belk Theater was probably the worst show i've seen by them of the handful i've seen. and it was also my last.

i still like the band and the new album isn't terrible, just boring. they aren't a band I jump through hoops for like they once were. it's ok to grow apart.

Haven't listened to it yet, but I enjoy The Avett Bros.

Also many other "bro bands." I would say "fuck the haters" but I'll be nice since they are already suffering enough pretending to enjoy the barely musical hipster garbage they listen to.

I dont really consider all jam bands bro bands. String cheese incident isn't really.

Also 311 and sublime are most bro bro bands

if a middle-aged guy plays a song of theirs on an acoustic guitar at one of the many horrible bars downtown/on Glenwood South, they might be a bro band

i don't think they were before they got popular, put out that last album, and he OD'd. Back in the mid-early-90s in raleigh, lots of punks and members of the "mod" and "ska" revival were big into sublime.

wait, what do you mean by "bro"? like "frat-bro"? i mean, if avett brothers now are a "bro" band, sublime definitely wasn't a "bro" band.

sublime is definitely a bro band. most of the more popular bro bands don't start off that way.

I just can't see how you label a band that covered descendants and mid-80s bad religion as a "bro" band. maybe they evolved into a band a lot of "bros" liked after Bradley was dead, but they weren't a bro band while they were around.

but again, what is a "bro" band? are you talking about a band that the frat boys like?

i'm confused...have we decided that if a band made up of only male musicians becomes too well-liked, they're then classified as a "bro" band and the cool folks aren't allowed to listen to them anymore?

i can never remember who i'm supposed to like and who i'm supposed to ridicule

Jack Johnson is a damn good call on bro music.

this dude i went to law school with fucking loved some OAR. he was a really cool guy, and not a bro type, he just liked awful music.

the avetts have quite a large following now, and i dont think they'll ever be the same. but i still love their older stuff - gleam, jubilee, emotionalism.

i don't understand the bro band thing. were they always a bro band? or did they earn this title with the expanded fan-base? i assume it was the latter.

back on-topic -- carpenter has too much rubin, too much production. i'm still holding out hope that they'll eventually return to their roots and produce an album on their own.

that won't happen until long after the shine has worn off. though they've been around longer with a dedicated fan base they are definitely riding the wave created by Mumford & Sons that is generating a lot of support in an older demographic. For lack of a better word it's this generation's "dad rock".

that being said, the album has grown on me a bit more but it will never be a Mignonette

This album has grown on me considerably. I still hate the more poppy songs on the record (namely, PGFM and I Never Knew You).

It is also the first TAB record to not contain at least one song that really blows me away.

The lyrics are still typical Avett quality, but musically it all sounds like Rick Rubin top-40 molded bullshit. Pretty disappointing considering their potential.

Kings of Leon has absolutely digressed to bro band status.

and everything else in this thread, for sure.

and yeah, Avett Bros have been poopoo for a solid 4-5 years.
