Anyone interested in some reasonably informed discussion might try: http://wdtprs.com/blog/2012/09/sloppy-reporting-about-new-church-tax-decision-by-bishops/

I don't see anything sensible in the "rebuttals" in what you posted. Germans have had the tax deductions for quite a long time. According to some German coworkers of mine they even have the church they belong to stamped on their drivers license.

That guys "rebuttals" are nothing more than semantics in an attempt to try and discredit the article. By questioning whether or not its a done deal is being disingenuous, especially when the article posted in this thread clearly indicates that this is now effective.

He then goes onto question whether the tax is essential for membership. As it clearly states, in Germany, it is!

The only good point hat he makes is how will they enforce such an act, at least for things such as communion. My guess is that as a preacher, they should be fairly familiar with anyone who is a member, and I'm sure there would be some type of communication internally so that those who are no longer members.

Where did I say "sensible" or "rebuttal"? I said "reasonably informed" and the blog author, whether you agree with his commentary or not, is exactly that, having lived in Europe for many years and being a priest assigned in the Vatican. He is not attacking the fact of the operation of this tax nor its historical antecedents, but whether the original article was being inflammatory and inaccurate. Several responses in that thread link and refer to the German bishops actual text to show how the article misread or misinterpreted several statements.

Quote :
""This decree makes clear that one cannot partly leave the Church," Germany's bishops' conference said last week, in a decision endorsed by the Vatican."

also, the german catholic church is part of the Roman Catholic Church, obv.
