Quote :
"According to the Killeen Daily Herald, 22-year-old Pfc. Isaac Lawrence Young was hiccuping while watching football on Sunday night with fellow soldier Spc. Patrick Edward Myers, 27.

In an apparent attempt to scare him and make the hiccups go away, Myers allegedly pointed a handgun at Young's head and pulled the trigger. The newspaper said Myers told police he thought the gun was loaded with dummy rounds.

Young, a motor transport operator from Missouri, was struck in the eye and died en route to the hospital."

Well he did cure the hiccups permanently.

depending on how close he was to the dude, even a dummy round could have done some damage.

not sure what you consider a "dummy round", but generally that refers to an inert round used for training purposes (often called a "snap cap"). they don't do anything.

Do they still make a bang? If so, I would assume that something would be expelled from the barrel.

no, there is no primer or powder. dummy rounds are not the same as blanks.

Oh ok, therein lies my confusion.

Either way it's a shitty excuse. Even if he knew it was unloaded, he should never point it at someone's face and pull the trigger. Especially considering he has had extensive military training, and isn't just some average redneck with a gun.

This has nothing to do with gun control and everything to do with stupid. If he had followed the simple rule of "don't ever point a gun at something you're not ok with killing" this wouldn't have happened.

It's too bad someone with a concealed carry permit wasn't there. You never know if someone might have been able to stop the shooter

by telling him not to point a gun at anyone he didn't intend to kill.

pro gun people have the dumbest arguments.

This clearly isn't good, and there is no other way around it. Accidents with guns happen frequently, guns are dangerous, and they lead to accidental deaths among many other things. Period.

You could replace the word "guns" with the word "cars" and the statement would still be true. Guns are nothing but a tool. It's a tool that is used for national defense, home defense, and personal safety. It's a tool that provides food for people who rely on wild game. It's a tool that people use to dispatch injured livestock and to protect the healthy livestock that provides their livelihood. It's a tool that is used to scare away threatening animals in the wild and to dispatch those that don't heed its warning. It's a tool...Nothing more, nothing less.

Even if you deny people's right to defend themselves with firearms a gun ban in America still hurts people who use them daily as a tool. And there are many people out there who rely on them for those types of purposes.

The only dumb argument I've seen is yours. It's based off naivety. The hundreds of millions of guns that have already been produced are not going anywhere; nor are the multimillion dollar corporations that build them and the massively influential groups that support them. Simple firearms can be made with tools and materials from a hardware store. The knowledge to create them is not going to be forgotten. When legit corporations can no longer provide a product that people want to purchase the black market will step in to take their place. More deaths will occur as a result of the black market trade than are prevented by any ban that might be put in place and they will be just as senseless and cruel as the ones that occur today.

The world isn't perfect and it's not going to be anytime soon.

Being in the Army doesn't necessarily equate to "extensive military training", either. It says the victim was a Motor-T guy; I'm speculating that the shooter was, too. These guys drove trucks and stuff; they weren't really trained to be gunfighters.

Even in the USMC, with "every Marine a rifleman", and probably a lot more weapons training in general than in the Army, most Marines are probably marginally proficient at best with firearms. Hell, my squadron had an incident where our Marine of the Quarter accidentally shot and killed his best friend, the NCO of the Quarter. Again, it was an incident of drinking and fucking off with a firearm. He was convicted of manslaughter and is now serving time.

Even if you're dumb enough to point a weapon at someone, I would hope that you'd have the sense not to squeeze the trigger even if you thought there were dummy rounds in it. How do you excuse your actions after something like this? What happens to you as a soldier?

First of all, I never talked about banning guns. Just pointing out that you can't continue to live under the delusion that guns are not inherently dangerous, even in the hands of trained people. This is just another datapoint.

Second, nobody is really being serious about getting rid of all the guns, that's just the propaganda machine. However, automatic weapons and concealed weapons are on the chopping block and rightfully so.

Third, what, wait you really owned me with a bunch of circular reasoning? Really?

chopping block in terms of what people on the left are actually concerned about. There seems to be this overwhelming notion that liberals want to do away with all guns, which isn't true.

no, they just don't know anything about them and confuse "assault weapon" with automatic weapon and so we end up with dumb bans on things like folding stocks and scary looking parts

All the gun owners I know are well aware of the dangers. I only shoot with folks who are very safety conscious. I won't even handle a gun if I've been drinking and I wouldn't be around folks who do.

I don't know that I've ever met a person who owned an automatic weapon. They are already tightly controlled and the costs associated with owning one are tremendous. Anyone who has one illegally is already part of the black market that I warned about.

Whether a person has a weapon under their shirt or on their hip is of little importance IMO. The consequences are the same whether they pull it from their hip or from underneath their shirt. I support the CC program because it provides safety and legal education as well as a background check. I'd [generally] have far more faith in gun enthusiasts who have made the effort to take part in the program than those who have not. Likewise, I wouldn't trust the type of person who would use a gun for illegal purposes to worry about concealed carry laws. You can strip competent law abiding citizens of their right to carry concealed, but it's not going to affect the criminal element within our society.
