Those ‘Binders Full of Women’? Turns Out Romney Didn’t Commission Them, Compile Them, or Pay Particular Attention to Them
Quote :
"During last night's debate, a question was raised by an attendee concerning each candidates track record on equality for women in the workplace.

In response to President Obama's touting of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act — the first bill he signed into law — Mitt Romney brought up his efforts to fill cabinet seats with "qualified women" during his time as governor of Massachusetts.

"We took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our cabinet," Romney told the undecided voters at Hofstra. "I went to a number of women's groups and said, 'Can you help us find folks,' and they brought us whole binders full of women."

Needless to say, the Internet had quite a bit of fun with that turn of phrase: From parody Twitter accounts, to a single-topic Tumblr blog, to a Facebook fan page with nearly 250,000 likes.

But not so fast says David Bernstein of the Phoenix to Mitt Romney: You didn't build that.

Memes and animated GIFs aside, it seems the "binders full of women" line was one of the few "truth massaging" moments that Romney wasn't called on by either Obama or moderator Candy Crowley.

According to Bernstein, there was in fact a "binder full of women," but it wasn't commissioned or compiled by Romney or his aides — it was put together by a collective of Massachusetts women's organizations called MassGAP before the 2002 election.

MassGAP's goal was to get more women into cabinet positions irrespective of which party won the election. "They did the research and put together the binder full of women qualified for all the different cabinet positions, agency heads, and authorities and commissions," writes Bernstein. "They presented this binder to Governor Romney when he was elected."

After flipping through it, Romney did truthfully appoint a commendable number of women to senior-level positions in his cabinet (42 percent overall), but, as Bernstein notes, "those were almost all to head departments and agencies that he didn't care about — and in some cases, that he quite specifically wanted to not really do anything."

Bernstein goes on to point out that, far more troubling, is Romney's claim that, despite having "led and consulted for businesses for 25 years [he] didn't know any qualified women, or know where to find any qualified women."

Not particularly surprising given that in the nearly two decades that Romney was head of Bain Capital, there wasn't a single female partner."

Yeah, he gave positions to women in response to pressure, but then over the course of his leadership, diminished the amount of women to below par, and far below his democratic successor.

There's nothing about the way romney phrased his answer that indicates he values women equally... Why even bring up that he tolerated a woman staff member to go home and do her womanly duties?

The binders full of women thing was funny. The part where he said he worked in business for over 20 years and didn't know of any qualified women was downright offensive. He wasn't running a business in the 1940s.

Also, I predict women in binders will be a very popular Halloween costume this year.

http://wonkette.com/487052/we-are-sure-mitt-romneys-lady-binders-are-nothing-like-outlaw-mormon-sect-joy-books-because-that-would-be-gross

Quote :
""Joy Books," as they're called, have been mentioned a lot in news stories regarding Warren Jeffs. They list the names of girls who are eligible for marriage, most of whom are underage (usually around 14 years old). The "Joy Books" have been talked about by members of the church who have fled their respective compounds, but the assumption was that the books merely listed the names of the girls who were to be married off without warning or consent. In the books on Big Love, we see pictures of young girls' faces, feet, hands, backs of heads, and backs of knees, as though they are slaves or cattle. In this clip, Nicki looks through some of the books, which she'd never seen before, and, after finding her own entry, maybe comes to terms with how gross the practice of shopping out girls is."

"Not as useful as the Trap Her, Keep Her, October 17, 2012
By Sabriel - See all my reviews
This review is from: Avery Durable View Binder with 2 Inch EZ-Turn Ring, White, 1 Binder (17032) (Office Product)
Maybe it's just my women, but they don't seem to want to fit into the space I've designated for them in this binder. They keep sticking out over the edges, even getting away in some cases. I thought using clear, glass-ceiling page protectors would help, but it doesn't seem to slow them down anymore.

I'm going to have to resort to more severe three-hole punching, to keep my women in line. And maybe switch to the Trap Her, Keep Her."

"Advanced, forward thinking design with equal containment opportunity...superior to folders!, October 17, 2012

My grandfather ran businesses, and his father before him. We used to keep women in loose leaf folders. Recently I realized the immense opportunities presented by new technology. We have come so far in our containment, there's no reason to look back now. Stride forward with a new and durable binder! Large quantities of women fit comfortably under your arm and don't easily get out of place! It used to be that one wrong move would leave stacks of women all over your floor. What a mess!"
