So I have to attend a Raleigh workshop on Western Boulevard safety second week of November. What suggestions do you have to improve safety on western boulevard?

I think that western boulevard and agent ferry need a pedestrian bridge or tunnel (each have benefits and negatives verse the other). There also seem to be a problem with acceptance of crosswalks for certain populations and I would like to have this topic covered at community centers and schools.

Suggestions?

this, so many people on the inside lane fuck this one up. it could stand to maybe shorten the median and make that inside turn not so tight

Start by giving it a better name. You know...something to do with the university. Wolfpack Blvd., Red Terror Lane, etc.

I think it will be more about how to stop people from playing frogger, but if road names come up ill suggest it.

The city actually has a standard way to try to change a road name, if I remember I'll find and post the process tomorrow.

I have no idea what subsurface utilities look like in the area so it may not even be feasible, but if there was a tunnel do you think it would get too sketchy?

no you can't change the name of that road. don't try to change things from my college years. it freaks me out when i'm trying to be nostalgic and everything's changed.

put tire spikes at the pullen bridge so motherfuckers trying to make a left on to eastbound western stop pulling up so damn far.

Def the left turn from af to western. I always try to take the inside lane bc at least if some idiot doesn't take the turn in to the correct lane, I won't be the one getting side swiped.

Tunnel would seem sketchy.

Bridge spanning two directions crossing Avent Ferry and Western, close the crosswalks.

Would a bridge stop people from just running across? I don't think it would, maybe if the fence was replaced in the median

Tunnel... since Western is up on a hill, it could potentially be done without having to add stairs to walk down.

A bridge is going to need a pretty ugly ramp

A bridge at Gorman. Tie it in with the planned greenway extension there.

Get the school of design to do something with the design process and build one that's really cool and will be a gateway to the university.

paint the trestle near the prison red and put NC STATE on one side and WOLFPACK on the other.

or some variation of that.

kinda like the one as ECU, without the shitty pirate stickers on it.

this isnt a safety issue, but it should happen regardless. make it actually feel like there is a major university up the road. plus, it'd look better than it being gray and rusted

A bridge there would be stupid as shit...you know how long the ramps would have to be to meet ADA requirements?

Like...this...long...

But, a pedestrian bypass is needed very badly; it's just not cost effective.

Who did the cost estimating for the $600k pedestrian bridge? I think it's probably closer with a 1 in front of that.

a pedestrian bridge at AF/W would take a lot of room. Gotta have wheelchair access/ramps, wide enough for large foot traffic, and tall enough to allow tall trucks to pass. A tunnel may be more feasible, but tunnels are sketch.

In pedestrian tunnel news, the DOT and Centennial Authority is currently seeking input for a pedestrian tunnel under Trinity

Someone recommended changing the name of Western Boulevard. Raleigh has put together a handy website with everything you need to get started:
http://www.raleighnc.gov/home/content/CityMgrDevServices/Articles/StreetNamesChanges.html

For something like Western Boulevard, the only way you have a chance is to get 100% approval from property owners

Wtf is wrong with "western boulevard"?

Also, I know the ? is supposed to go inside the " but I think that is a stupid rule and an going to be a conscientious objector from here out

But anyway, why do we have to name everything the college touches after the fucking pack? Is the historical significance of the road name superseded by the desire to brand everything with childish fucking school pride? Get over yourselves, and don't bother our (clearly overburdened ) city officials with tedious bullshit

Don't mind me I'm fucking pissed because my dog just shit in my carpet

From personal observation of cities where they have pedestrian tunnels and bridges, people tend to completely ignore tunnels but will use the bridges. Why I have no idea. Also I could see the tunnels becoming sketch central in the evening hours.

haha that would make the traffic reports more entertaining. "Five car pileup on Red Terror Lane. Oh the humanity!"

It is appropriate to put the punctuation outside of the quote in some instances

^I think the only way either would be effective is if the median is blocked to froggers

Blocking the median won't stop morons. But then again the bridge or tunnel won't either.

A green chain-link fence in the median is one cheap and ugly way to effectively stop people from crossing dangerously.
