I've always been fascinated by tall radio towers

anyone know which tower is the tallest in the triangle?

have you ever climbed a radio tower?

do you have any interesting photos of particularly tall radio towers?

that's where I lost my cat back in 2005. I can't pass that stretch on 70 without thinking about that ordeal. Took me about a week to find the poor thing. Spent hours walking and hiking through all that land

In 1989, both towers used by WRAL/WTVD collapsed b/c of ice.

My radio shop is across from one of 4 that makes up our system (Durham).

I do believe the WRAL towers down at Auburn (Hwy 70 between Garner/Clayton) are
the tallest in the triangle....and a couple of fellow engineers that have been with the city
20 plus years agree.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_structures_in_the_United_States_by_height

At 609.6 meters, the WECT TV6 Tower in Colly Township NC and the WBTV Tower in Dallas, NC are (well past tense for the Colly Township one) tied for the 4th structure in the US (tied with many other towers of the same height). NC appears fairly well represented on that linked list.

More on the Colly Township tower:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WECT_TV6_Tower

Quote :
"Before demolition, WECT Tower was, along with several other masts, the seventh tallest man-made structure ever created; and was not only the tallest structure in North Carolina, but also the tallest in the United States east of the Mississippi River"

It was demolished on Sept of this year

How do they compare to the one next to 64 heading to the beach? That one isn't in the Triangle, but it is pretty fucking tall.

Most municipal "Radio System Engineers" (or whatever a city calls the folks that work in their radio shop) like myself don't climb their own towers....too much liability..most cities outsource that activity to an outside Tower Climbing company. I would sign a waiver and do it if my city let me but that will never happen.

How tall are the three Clayton towers? Those are always landmarks when flying from RDU to Franklin County, but I haven't been up in a while.

The towers in Clayton are each about 2000' tall. WRAL-TV is like 1988' and the WRDC tower is right at 2000'.

Back to the OP:
Here's a few pics I took of the 1040' tall 94.5 FM WPTI tower in Eden/Madison, NC. When I took them it was still licensed as WGBT. I suppose I could post pics of the transmitter and stuff if anyone wanted to see it. The more impressive shots are the ones of WGHP's tower and transmitter building, but I don't think they want me to post them .

There's an amateur radio repeater antenna on that tower at 900'. N4IV @ 147.345MHz

^ Good pics. I work right across from our Camden Ave (Durham) site. We also host one of the 2 VIPER Durham sites (the other being Cole Mill Rd) and a 70cm Ham Repeater. If we don't use encryption you might hear me talking to coworkers on our Durham System Talkgroup (scanner 25200) which is full time patched to a statewide VIPER talkgroup of 33472.

Hey there Kerr YMCA...

My last job was doing structural analyses on towers. It wasn't a bad gig, but it was pretty repetitive.

A couple of BASE jumpers attempted to gain access and climb the 1989' tower where I live in Trenton last year. I suppose this tower is tied for 4th tallest in the state.

Here's how to base jump from a tower. j/k. I am a tower climber and I do not condone these activities.
