I just watched the WRAL article on it. The employees said that between forgoing their pension, paying a higher premium on health insurance, and an 8% wage cut, that they would be losing 30% of their total monetary benefits and they would be better off on unemployment.

If that's the case more power to them. Although I don't think they realize how much COBRA costs shit ain't cheap

There were plans to close 8 of the factories at the end of the year anyways.

If that's the case then the unemployment benefit is too high.

A 30% cut in benefits? Sounds like Hostess is just doing what the rest of the labor market already did years ago. Who still offers pensions?

But the thing is that Hostess were already in a Bankruptcy since January... The Teamster Union agreed to the change, but not the Baker's Union...

Now all of them will be closing. They honestly should have slimmed down way faster, even after their restructuring from their 2004 bankruptcy, which took almost 5 years to do.

wat?

No they haven't... They filed one in 2004 and one in January of this year. Both times were a result from too high debt mostly from labor costs; although 2004 had higher ingredient costs as well.

Some reposts from reddit that I enjoyed:

http://www.kpax.com/news/hostess-announces-possible-liquidation-including-billings-plant/

Quote :
"Eusebio Diaz, business agent for Local 466, said this strike is not a negotiation process: "What we want to do is we want to shut the company down and force them to liquidate so somebody will come buy a plant and we have a future. Somebody that has some money and knows how to run a company.""

http://www.ibj.com/hostess-plant-closings-so-far-spare-indy-columbus/PARAMS/article/37864

Quote :
"“Some employees are apparently under the misimpression that if they force Hostess to liquidate, another company will buy our bakeries and offer them employment," Rayburn said in his statement.

The industry has “far too much capacity,” Rayburn said. “I believe the leadership of the bakers union knows this fact, but is willing to sacrifice its Hostess employees for the sake of preventing other bakery companies from asking for similar concessions.”"

Pabst Owner Metropoulos Considers Bid for Hostess Brands

Source: Bloomberg

C. Dean Metropoulos & Co., the private equity firm that owns Pabst Brewing Co., is considering an offer to buy Hostess Brands Inc., which said today it plans to liquidate its business. “Our family would love to purchase these iconic brands,” said Daren Metropoulos, a principal at the Greenwich, Connecticut-based firm, which paid $250 million for Pabst in 2010. “We are actively pursuing this deal as no doubt strategics will also.”

C. Dean Metropoulos, founder of the firm, has specialized in purchasing struggling brands, such as Chef Boyardee and Bumble Bee Tuna and turning them around. The firm paid close attention to the maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread during its bankruptcy proceedings, Daren Metropoulos has said.

We have analyzed this opportunity very carefully for a few years now,” Metropoulos said in an e-mail. “Shedding the complications of the unions and old plants makes it even more attractive.”

The 82-year-old company also makes Hostess CupCakes, Ding Dongs and Ho Hos. The private equity firm is “fully prepared to participate in any process involving selling the brands,” Daren Metropoulos said.
