It seems like nirvana hasn't come out with anything in like 20 years

you are kidding.

I wouldnt even consider red hot chili peppers a good band whereas nirvana is an all-time great. Clearly not for skill, but for vocals, lyrics, tone, and just general apathy and art they are legends. People will still stop feeling feelings 50 years from now when they hear nirvana. Whereas with red hot clown peppers 10 year old girls will celebrate rollercoasters and aeroplanes.

The only good thing i can think of that came from the peppers is the sock on the cock. Sock on the cock rocked and it also led to me realizing you can drink a bottle of crown royale and then walk around wearing just the bag it came in.

An all time great for general apathy? Please, my band puts them to shame. We didn't even care enough to learn to play instruments or write songs. We are way greater than nirvana.

verse chorus verse, rape me, lithium, francis farmer, aneurysm give me a fucking break. under the bridge?

Yeah im not even having this discussion. Coldplay and john mayer would be better suited for the liberals and pussies on this board. Throw in a guy in tight jeans with a tiny ballsac talking about his unconditional love for some chick that doesnt like nerds with horn rimmed glasses or some corporate backed non drug using fake rock band screaming about going through puberty late and the stress disorder that caused them to develop

I cant talk about this

I don't see why you're quoting "Rape Me" as one of Nirvana's finest...the song is pretty dull and standard, outside of the lyrics

I just find Under the Bridge to be more musically pleasing and uplifting than, say, Lithium or In Bloom (though these are both very good songs)

RAWR RAWR RAWR Nirvana is so much better and anyone who thinks otherwise is a giant, stupid vagina with no balls RAWR

Gonna just point out all, literally all, people saying RHCP are in fraternities.

Basically the same thing as the Doors vs. Love; pretty much same time period, same record label, same number of relevant albums as each other, but I guarantee you the people saying RHCP probably have very little experience, if not ever heard of Love, yet still feel powerful enough to make judgments. Exact same thing going on here...

Rape Me is one of the greatest songs ever written in my opinion.

The entire song is about how the music industry from the producers, agents, etc tried to rape them and take away all of their liberties before releasing their follow-up album.

They were under a ton of pressure to release a commercial success as a follow-up to Nevermind and releasing an album that couldnt even be sold in Wal-Mart (the leader in CD sales at the time) was pretty ballsy. The entire album was re-mastered before release without their consent. The artwork was modified. The record company made them bend over and take it and they did a pretty damn good job overall of standing up to it.

Verse, chorus, verse was a commentary on how they even tried to dictate the structure of their songs.

Unreal. The music industry got their way. There haven't been more than a handful of top selling albums in the last 15 years that have even been worth listening to let alone owning.

I just listened to Rape Me, and it was as I remembered it...not very impressive musically and pretty much your generic Nirvana song

I don't care all that much what it's supposed to be about...and anyway, Kurt Cobain never gave too much of a shit about his lyrics

I'm not saying Nirvana isn't bad ass...but that ain't one of their best imo

Other people who would say RHCP: white kids with dreads, some real estate agent who graduated college in 1999, employee at a hobby store specializing in radio controlled cars, manager at Tyler's Taproom (any of the triangle locations), Carolina Mudcats front office employee, Carmax employee, Some dude living in a Cary apartment who travels to IKEA to buy furniture, etc etc etc

I like to base my musical preferences on who the general consensus decides to be an all time great band and not worry about who I like to listen to more. so obviously I like nirvana.

Do you honestly think people saying RHCP in this thread make music a priority or just something they "have in the background" of "drankin' beer" or "fuckin' some chick?" Both great things, but it doesn't give one an expert opinion on music; I don't give a shit how much you're "into it." I think consensus opinions on the comparisons of these two bands are probably pretty accurate, considering they've had almost 2 decades to be formed.

What's hilarious is the RHCP camp to start re-releasing vinyl and pressing new 7" records. Nobody that cares about music gives a shit. Reminds me of GnR's (another really awful, awful band)'s Chinese Democracy LP. They couldn't give it away...

I don't care about the people saying red hot chili peppers, and caring too much about what type of people like the same music as you do is a pretty shitty way to live.

I like both of these bands a lot, and if nirvana was still around they would probably win. But, they aren't so the edge goes to rhcp for me just because they are still putting out music I like.

But Chad Smith is a better drummer than Grohl and Flea is probably one of the more skilled bassists. Nirvarna is still a better band.

^^^You do realize people owning 18 copies of recordings of the Mannheim Steamroller could qualify as an "audiophile," right? Just because you own some UHQR MFSL copy of bullshit doesn't rid you of the adage that a turd can't be polished, right? You can't justify liking crap just because you know what technically sounds good or own the technically best copy of it. It's pretty obvious, despite what credentials you think you may have. Sorry, bro.

Another thing, the op says which is your favorite. It doesn't say which band is greater, or more culturally relevant, or will be most remembered by music critics in 50 years.

If someone asks me what my favorite movie is, depending on the day you ask I might say Indiana jones and the last crusade. That doesn't mean I think it should be #1 on the AFI greatest movies of all time list.

In response to the original post, I'd say the two cannot be compared. One is some California-based (and later inspired by evidence of ill-formed, idiotic lyric) white kid funk band with a lot of energy, yet no substance. The other band is a definitive genre-setting (in, at the very least, the mainstream eyes), group that still inspires bands today.

You can't really compare the two. I know music is subjective and all, but it's when people try to basically "force" artistic merit on bands like RHCP, that's when there's a huge problem. It's just a bunch of white kids and a child actor having fun, and maybe one dude who took it seriously who has long since left. There's absolutely nothing serious about the Chili Peppers and there hardly ever was.

Compare them to OAR or something. Seems highly more plausible.

^7 Yeah, pretty much.

^6 No, I don't have any obscure shit like that, and I'm not even of the nutty audiophile school who only listens to stuff on SACD or whatever...but you're trying to make it out like RHCP are a vapid, crappy band for dumb jocks or casually-listening dipshits with awful musical taste--a sort of Nickelback with a slapped bass--and that's absurd.

Vinyl? Yep. Hi-fi stereo gear? Bi-amped electrostats, 800w of subwoofer, and a total cost of double what I have tied up in my truck. I took piano lessons as a kid, was All-State band throughout highschool (on 2 different instruments). I like everything from Ben Folds Five to Wilco to Merle Haggard to Megadeth to Cat Stevens to Rush (who you probably look down on for not being a serious enough "prog band"). I have a music room in my house, where I keep my tube amps and vintage/unusual guitars, and my saxophone, and where I hope to pick up all the gear I need this weekend to put together a legitimate home studio. I mean, I have never been a professional musician or anything, but I'm hardly the white guy with dreads working at Carmax. If you want to offer your opinion that RHCP and GnR are shitty, then I feel like my opinion to the contrary is at least equally valid.

(and of course RHCP aren't "serious"--that shouldn't be held against them...and John Frusciante is a dysfunctionally serious musician, as a side note)

I think we're talking about artistry here versus any debate about how sound is best replicated or ...I dunno, whatever you're going on with about mentioning all that stuff. That was also my point earlier. Funny enough, I still don't believe any of the bands you listed are worth a damn and although I'm laughing at my stereotypical bs, to each his own...

I'm saying that Nirvana is a way more merited band in terms of artistry, influence, creativity, you name it. And that the Chili Peppers are a bunch of dudes having fun. Has anyone ever "reflected" or "been inspired" by a RHCP song that has gone on and mattered? I personally can't think of a single artist to say one of their major inspirations has been the Chili Peppers. Their greatest success was MTV, and that's it. They're just not that great and won't be remembered in such high regards as Nirvana. The fact that they keep on recording is only adding to my theory here...
