I know that Internet Explorer up to version 8 (2009-2010, still the latest version in XP) has displayed the red X, and so does IE9 (2011-2012, still the latest version in Vista) if Tracking Protection is disabled (otherwise it's the blue "blocked" sign, even if the image wasn't blocked but just doesn't exist), while IE10 appears to display a black X if Tracking Protection is disabled (otherwise it's a black variant of the typical blue "blocked" sign).

FTR, Mozilla-based products, until Firefox 3, used a broken grey sheet of paper with a pink triangle, green sphere, and blue cube, but now they use a broken white sheet of paper: http://becomearobot.wordpress.com/2008/05/21/firefox-gets-a-new-broken-image-placeholder/

Chrome (I think) once used a broken blue sheet of paper, but now it uses a broken green sheet of paper.

Safari uses a white question mark in a blue box.

Opera just uses the word "Image"

Generally methinks the "red X" is an IE-only thing.

Yea I haven't actually seen a red x in so long that when someone says something about a red x and I see a frog in an Ice cube, I almost forget what they're talking about.

frog in an ice cube is different, that just means that ImageShack b& this domain, showing its own "blocked domain" image for any pic posted here from there, and some chucklefuck forgot that

now if someone posted a pic a long time ago, and it's now gone, and you used IE and disabled tracking protection for this site, you'd see the X, and if it's IE9 or earlier, it would be a red X

ImageShack won't warn you, it'll just show that "blocked domain" image to everyone else (because the original image will already be in your browser cache).
