I "played" coed ball when I was really little.

The one time the boys passed to me, the ball hit me right in the teeth. I was hurt and humiliated so I ran off the court and cried.

Another time, an opposing player bounced the ball off me to keep possession as he was flying out of bounds. I felt that this wasn't fair so I ran off the court and cried.


When I was 11 or so, there was a single girl's rec league game that I totally dominated. I had a double-double with easily 20+ rebounds. I basically got all of the rebounds. I had quite a few assists, too, which is a hard thing in a girl's game--you have to gently get the ball in their hands and persuade them to actually shoot it. Anyway, my father was very proud. Otherwise, I was perpetually on my period, and I never let him forget it.

I was 5'6" and not athletic. I was just good for free throws and lay-ups. I started to develop a decent jump shot right around the time that conditioning became important. I've always been too self-conscious to actually run so I was done. I used to get beat on sprints by everybody, including a girl who was 4'9" and all torso.
