But nobody is actively rooting for us to remain mediocre to keep a coach. Which is what you were saying.

Don't you guys get that the dumber of these arguments wouldn't even occur if we were better about terminating Earl aliases. He makes us argue w each other in dumber ways.

We're 3-3 in single possession games this year. If we're counting the Clemson/WF/USC games as almost wins, think we should also look at the FSU/Cuse/BC games as almost losses as well. That stuff typically evens out over the course of the season.

We still got a shot at 9 wins and 6 ACC wins which is absolutely a successful season, regardless of our revised midseason expectations.

Excited for our team to be hyped and pissed off against UNC. Think that's gonna be a 2+ TD win. If we blow that game then we can freak out. All this talk now is reactionary.

This guy has more talented teams than TOB sure but he wins less. At least TOB was a respectable and likeable coach, Dave can't handle losing. The BC game last week was probably the worst coached win in school history.

meh, wake game is maybe 25% on coaching. 25% on the freshman mistake. 50% on finley's loss of brain function during the game.

Every game we lost this year was within reach (WF quite literally). 3 losses by a touchdown or less. Players were in it until the final drive of each of them.

The only one that got away fell apart after we gave them a free touchdown on the not-offsides freeze pick-6. We were only down by 7 at the time and driving well. If that play doesn't happen I think we still lose but only by 7.

This is leaps and bounds an improvement over getting smashed by non-power 5 teams and not standing a chance against the top of the division.

2014 - 0 close losses, 5 blow outs, 0 mid-range losses
2015 - 1 close loss, 2 blow outs (including bowl game), 3 mid-range losses
2016 - 4 close losses, 1 blow out, 1 mid-range loss
2017 - 3 close losses, 1 blow out, 0 mid-range losses
(close = 7 or less, blow out = more than 14)

Quite obvious how much better we are now.

Here's a better look at DD's trajectory:

Year - losses/average score differential in losses

2013 - 9/16.66
2014 - 5/21.4
2015 - 6/14.5 (includes bowl loss)
2016 - 6/12.66
2017 - 4/10.25 (so far)

In TOB's last year we had 6 losses by an average of 14 points, also including a bowl loss. So that means DD's 3rd year matched TOB's 6th year, and we've only gotten better since then.

^^ next year he'll go like 5-7 with a bunch of underclassmen but you'll still have Earls insisting he needs another 4 years to get another experienced team in place, that will win 7-8 games (but is also capable of being a playoff team). Because we should be happy with that, forever, in our BEST seasons.

After a 6-1 start it's disappointing but looking objectively we lost one game we probably should have won and went 1-1 in toss up games. I'm not mad at Clemson and ND loses those are games we should have lost. 9-3 is probably our ceiling as a program and we should have reached that this year but even though the division was pretty trash this year getting six conference wins is something we aren't gonna do very often. Next year will be very telling if we regress or if we can sustain. I expect us to regress but he deserves a shot to show he can sustain.

He did get 6 conference wins so he deserves some credit for that. However, I am sick of watching games be closer than they should be because we have no kicker. This is ridiculous. Also, can someone explain to me why we did not just kneel the ball at the 10 yard line to run out the clock?

^ This. The inability to kick chipshot field goals is entirely on this coach. Bambard should be kicked the fuck off the team. He adds nothing and is just taking a scholarship away from someone other player who can actually play his position. Fuck that kid. If he keeps his scholarship, then Doeren should be fired

Ehhh next year’s team is gonna have a lotta seniors, especially on offense. Truth is, we were supposed to have a great defense with all the seniors up front and the defense was nothing special. So...maybe it’s even worse next year or maybe the drop off actually is minimal. I don’t View next year as a rebuild...there’s plenty of players returning that there’s the no reason for a 5-7 type drop off imo

Not directed at anyone in particular, but I can't fight the feeling that a huge part of the 6 win ACC season was the fact that we played only 1 conference game against an opponent that will end up in the top 25. Louisville might end up in the top 25 if they win their bowl game, but that's it.

^i get that. But...UL win is a good win, people discounted that earlier and they actually had a solid season. And had UL beaten us they’d def be a top 25 team. We can’t really help that FSU turned to shit this year, but we took care of business and beat them regardless. Wake, while not ranked, is improved for sure. Still a frustrating loss. Cuse lost their QB and finished the season poorly, but they beat Clemson and proved they were not a pushover. The bottom and middle of the ACC is getting better and better (FSU having a serious outlier season) and the top remains very strong with clemson yet again looking like a playoff team

Doeren isn't showing up on anyone's short list but is showing up on a lot of people's long list. Keep an eye on boards as the coaching carousel dominoes start to fall. Tennessee didn't come calling, and I think we are generally safe, but now we have to think about Misssissippi State taking someone elses coach and Nebraska looms large still...
Quote :
"Head coaching record: 55-34

2017 total pay: $2.21 million

Why it’s a fit: The Shawnee, Kansas, native is a Drake football graduate and a Midwestern guy coaching in the ACC. He did well in two years at Northern Illinois following Jerry Kill before heading to NC State where, over the course of five years, he’s built a sustainable program. The Wolfpack’s offense has averaged 30 points three of the last four years, and Doeren’s four years as a defensive assistant at Wisconsin gives him some Big Ten credentials.

One question: Why leave the Wolfpack when it’s just getting good? NC State’s next two or three years could be special."

Its interesting to see how the people on the Nebraska board are talking about him

Quote :
"I think this guy should be in the mix."

Quote :
"He's great. My gut is he won't leave NC State for Nebraska, at this point...just call it a hunch, but I'd take him"

Quote :
"He is building a hell of a program at NC State. Nothing but respect for him. If he has a passion for Nebraska football (given that we don't get Frost after Riley), then definitely throw him in the mix. If he doesn't, as Mike Ditka always said, "Next!""

Quote :
"He was on the "hot seat" before the season. He's having a good season (the previous few, not so much) and is a decent coach overall. I just think we should have better options than him even if Nebraska isn't a premier job right now. A lot of our fans would have to "google" him to even know who he is. We just got done doing that 3 years ago."

Quote :
" This guy is doing some great things at a hell hole is only 37 years old. He's also making less than 2 million a year I believe. He's already coaching in the area too, so no BS about would he fit."
