This is my mom's car, apparently the warranty ended Feb. of 2011. Its only got 35,000 miles. Dealer quoted $1700 then changed it to $1100 as "goodwill assistance." I'm pissed because first of all how the hell was the warranty up last February, and second of all how after just 35,000 miles is this thing leaking? Apparently its a common problem with these cars, and Toyota obviously knows that. We are on the phone with Toyota Customer Care now, any advice? 12/3/2012 1:10:10 PM |

Might as well take it to an independent shop if they can get parts, otherwise $1100 is your best bet.
You could also dump some of that magic goo in there to swell the seals, but that's usually not a good idea.
Does the 2009 still use Dexron III? Stuff's cheap, just keep adding more.

changed one in a taurus once. what a pain in the ass. that's one of those jobs that's almost worth paying someone else to do. 12/4/2012 6:06:46 PM |

I had honda tell me the same thing about an 08 civic i used to have. Apparently the part of the car that you use to "drive" with... is not considered part of the drivetrain.
The dealer was at least a bit more helpful and called honda on my behalf and got the quote down to around $300 with Honda's help and the dealer's help - but the original numbers were just about what you were quoted. 12/5/2012 7:27:11 AM |

a steering rack would never be considered part of the drivetrain

^ 2009 Camry came out in Feb 2008. Entirely possible the car was purchased then which would make the expiration Feb 2011 (3 years) 12/6/2012 8:25:00 PM |
